Bicycle trip to Panama, 1971. These shots show the wonderful back road, Nevada 305, south from Battle Mountain to Austin. I don't think we saw on car during the day, the sign says 90 miles! More photos of the trip on this link:

From an unintended metric century today. I had planned for fifty miles, but one of the roads I had on the map turned out to be unimproved; really not cricket for skinny sew-ups. Happily I had a friend along the way for a bottle refill; I had only two 24oz bottles on the bike.

I was in the St. Louis area again on Sunday, enjoying the roads near Babler Park and Rockwoods Reservation. This is a very hilly, wooded area, and the roads just meander through the trees.
It's a beautiful area, but bring some low gears to get up the hills!

There are some busier areas, such as in Eureka next to the Six Flags amusement park. Even on a Sunday, they seem to stay busy.
With these narrow, winding roads, any traffic can be an issue. There are few opportunities for cars to pass me, so I will pull over sometimes just to be a nice guy. No point in aggravating the drivers and leaving the local riders to deal with it.

I live and ride in one of those places that draws riders from the greater metropolitan area on sunny weekends. Inevitably there are a few folks with their blinding front lights who are terrified of the country roads that I ride for thousands of miles every year. They feel they must "take the lane." There are the club riders and the Wednesday Morning World Championship riders who think nothing of riding two or three abreast with a long string of cars stuck behind them. Those of us who live and ride here year round are left to deal with the ill will generated by this small number of our fellow cyclists.

just for your benefit... my ride in the quiet hills west of St. Louis were done on "Big Red"... the glamorous Hetchins Magnum Opus. It's functional as well as overly ornate.

a bit of a tangent....
The local Peoria club does a ride with the semi-local club of Bloomington/Normal, where we start from our respective cities and meet in the town of Mackinaw, IL. I rode the Hetchins, and had no sooner parked it than a fellow walked up and asked "is that a Magnum Opus?". This isn't a question that I am used to hearing, but I did turn the bike around so the "Magnum Opus" decal on the top tube would show, and started chatting with the fellow.
It turned out that he had grown up in England, near Derby. He had a few Mercians, IIRC, and of course knew something about the other high-end English builders. I/we figured out that he had just contacted me about my upcoming vintage ride and had exchanged a couple of emails.
The Hetchins does make a fine conversation starter!
another tangent... I asked if any of his Mercians had the barber pole stripe on the seat tube, and he said "no". I was a bit disappointed, since that is one of their signature embellishments, but I guess when you are near the Mercian shop, you get somewhat jaded with these things. I still think they are pretty cool.

in 2003 I shipped Big Red to Jim Cunningham at Cycle Art in San Diego. He rode the bike to the Jimmy whats his name event in Fallbrook.
