11 speed groupset for 10 speed hub

I have a set of 10 speed wheels which are non upgradeable besides shaving the free hub.

But I found that the R7000 Shimano 105 and R8000 Shimano Ultegra 11-34T cassettes would fit a 10 speed free hub.

Question is for the SRAM Rival 1 PG1130 11-42T cassette, will it fit the 10 speed free hub? According to SRAM site

it says
  • 11-42t cassette fits 10 and 11-speed non-XD™ driver bodies (1.85mm spacer is required for 11-speed drivers
  • Compatible with non-XD™ driver bodies

Thanks

looking at the specs and especially at the spacer needed for 11 speed, I would say yes, but have not personally done it.

going 1x ???? (specs note 11-42 is 1x only)

This. Unless someone who has done it chimes in your best bet is to contact SRAM. They want you to buy their cassettes so would be in their best interest to provide the correct info.

Yes it will fit and needs a 1x specific RD like Sram Rival 1 or Shimano RX812 or using a 2x RD out of spec

so i contacted SRAM. And the answer is no. The specification above it posted for mountain bike hubs only.

However, it seems the Shimano option works.

Thanks anyway. Would have been fun to try single chain.

It will fit, says so right in the description.
"11-42t cassette fits 10 and 11-speed non-XD™ driver bodies (1.85mm spacer is required for 11-speed drivers"
The guy you talked to probably confused it with a cassette that requires the XD driver. There is no difference between 10 speed road and mtn freehubs, the difference showed up in 11 speed road.

Besides that there are other 11-42/46 11 speed cassette options out there other than Sram all of which would fit.

What is a "Mountain Bike Hub"? In some cases hubs were only sold with 8/9/10 freehubs as MTB 8-11 freehubs.

You may find that answer is actually affirmative.

Respond from SRAM
On the website, the following refers to mtb compatibility only:
  • 11-42t cassette fits 10 and 11-speed non-XD™ driver bodies (1.85mm spacer is required for 11-speed drivers)
With mtb wheels, both 10 and 11 speed have the same size freehub/wheel dish and can accommodate booth 10 and 11 speed drivetrains.

This refers to road freehubs and fitment:
  • Compatible with 11-speed road splined driver bodies
With road wheels, the original, 10 speed, driver is shorter and has a different wheel dish than an 11 speed freehub (2013-current).

Here's a graphic:

With you're 404 from 2010 you are limited to 10 speed sram/shimano road cassettes only.

Again road 10 speed and mtn bike freehub bodies are 100% the same. If something fits a standard mtn bike freehub body it will 100% fit a 10 speed road freehub( will also fit 11 speed road with a spacer). The needing a spacer thing only refer to road 11 speed. MTN bikes are able to get away with running 11 and 12 speed cassettes on their "10 speed" standard freehub bodies because the cassettes are machined to sit over the freehub body flage on the inside. Road have tiny big cogs so there isn't enough meat to machine them to fit over the flange so they made the freehub body longer when they went to 11 speed. The R8000 Shimano Ultegra 11-34T 11 speed cassette IS big enough to be machined to fit over the flange so that is how it fits 10 speed road freehub bodies. And again if you still doubt the Sram will fit even though it will buy a shimano, sunrance or Box 11-42 11 speed cassette and use that. Any of them will fit.
