Hey All,
I bought a sweet Eddy Merckx Arcobeleno today! I will put pics to follow. Full Campy groupo.

Upgrades? Before I look to upgrade I ask myself. "What is the bike not doing that I want it to do?" If the answer is nothing, the bike is great...no upgrades needed.

none... its fine... dont make into a modern bike its best as is... its rare.and unique ...

Looks quite good to me. If you regularly climb steep stuff or ride in the mountains, you might want an inner chain ring smaller than the 42 tooth ring now in place. Looks like a sweet ride.

An hour or two of TLC to that drivetrain would be a great start. There are also some aesthetic tweaks I would do (black bar tape & saddle, silver setapost) but that's a personal preference thing.

I'm allergic to keeping white clean, but if you want that, go for it! On the post, the appearance wouldn't change much; it's already black. The big thing is that the black seatpost clashes against the silver drivetrain and stem, which is why I'd try to match it.

My preference would be to upgrade it but as unobtrusively as possible. I'd ditch the saddle for something black. Replace the seatpost with something silver. I really hate generation 1 Ergo levers, so I'd ditch them.
Depending on how much you climb, and how much you like doing it in big gears, you might upgrade to 10 speed - new brifters (generation 2 Ergos are nice), new rear derailleur. I'd think seriously about changing the bar, because it might be pretty old. If you replace the stem for better fit (because that one looks really small), I'd go with another 3T - don't do the "fake threadless" thing - yuck! If those are Chorus hubs, I'd look very closely at the rims - those look like Reflex, and I had spokes pull through on those. If they need replacing, there are nice silver low profile rims you can rebuild the wheels with.
That fork looks like a replacement in carbon. Any chance the owner had the original?
Cables, brake pads, new bar tape in black - white is for red bikes...

I love the red and white. Im sure if I did black with the blue frame it would look great. I was thinking of upgrading it to a 9speed and keeping the derailer but I would love 10 speed with a big crank!

Probably not at this Crystal Lake... it's used for drinking water, so there's no actual access to it. No boating, swimming, etc. Plus it's right next to I-280, so probably not the greatest place to camp. It's pretty though, and is actually part of the San Andreas fault. There's also another very similar fault line lake, San Andreas Lake, just north of Crystal Lake.

EDIT: Turns out that the one to the South is 'Upper' and the one to the north is 'Lower', which could relate to where it is relative to the input from Hetch Hetchy. I guess I have that tendency to always see North as "up"

Ditch the seat for a black one; black bar tape as stated by others and clean the drive train up. I cringed when I saw that. But even my engines on my vehicles you could have a steak dinner on and be happy.
