On my road bike during a group ride there was this massive hill we flew down. Managed to hit 48 MPH before I chickened out and slowed.

On my tandem with a good buddy, coming down a mountain pass (RAMROD) we hit 62. It was terrifying, especially when we passed an RV. One small mistake, chipmunk or blowout could have ruined our whole day. There were several guys trying to draft us during the descent which pealed off one by one. Never attempted to repeat that but we did hit the mid 50s a few times, still scary.

Ignoring a couple of times my GPS unit got confused, Strava says 79,2 km/hr (49,5 mph) during a half-IM race recently, which was pretty much in a "nose on the stem" position, hunkering down deep in the drops. It's pretty hard to find a descent which is both straight-ish and long enough yet steep enough to really exceed that around here.

Goes to show how much more aero a full out tri bike is compared to a regular road bike in the drops, too, the guys on full out tri rigs who are about the same weight as me hit 85-89.5 km/hr on that same downhill.

78km/h. There are lots of steep descents here, but none that is straight enough to reach really high speeds before having to slow down for a corner.

Indicated 75.7 mph on a long steep descent during a road race in Colorado. I had pedaled hard over the top, and tucked deep on the descent, to try to catch a small group ahead of me.

A couple canyons north of that spot, I used to routinely hit 60+ mph on another big descent.

Its probably 48mph a few years ago on RAGBRAI in the Driftless region of NE IA. I scrubbed off a good bit of speed thru the descent due to how many others were all around me. Afterwards, I concluded it was dumb to have gone so fast for so long, given the number of others riding and how unpredictably squirrely cyclists are.

155 mph on my road (motor)bike...but just 45 mph bicycle. It's amazing how fast a bicycle feels above 40 mph compared to a motorcycle at twice the speed.

40 mph is max for me. Only bad things happen after 40. Lets see I am color blind,, have poor depth perception, and only 20-40 corrected vision in both eyes. Rocks and potholes just blend in. Not a good mix for speed on a bike.

Hit 55mph last year on the backside of Hogpen during Six Gap, smooth and comfortable, didn't even realize I was going that fast, just happened to look down at the computer. lol

55 or 62 mph depending where you trust Garmin or Strava more. Coming down Barlow Pass toward Granite Falls. I remember a kid at a campground staring at me like bikes aren't supposed to go that fast.

I hit 80 km/hr on Highland Valley Rd (near Ashcroft BC) and definitely could have gone faster but fear and good judgement won out.

I have had our tandem up around 45 MPH (on a very accurate cycle computer) several times. All were while touring in Scotland, so a fully loaded tandem with fork mounted bags going 45 MPH. Mrs Dan is a very good sport.

Rule of touring Scotland: What goes down, will probably go up, and if you hang on for the ride you don't have to spend as much energy.

65km/h (40.39mph). Plenty of stretches where I ride up in the hills, but climbs are never more than 15% grade.

I have hit 45 mph on a nearby street that has a particularly steep drop. That was with a stiff tailwind. Generally, I'd max out at 41 there, but the city in its infinite wisdom messed with the lights so that 9 times out of 10 the light at the bottom, where I'd be hitting maximum speed, is red when I get to it. Makes for a good brake test.

EDIT: It's hard to find something around here that descends but is also straight.

old virginia has a nice long but not steep descent, have hit 49 on that. that was before i knew about really getting low. some day i'll give it a whirl again. would like to hit 50 just once.

40mph white knuckling it. Only because others were there passing me, indicating higher speeds were doable. If it was by myself, I'm certain I'd be riding the brakes. I've always said I'd rather climb then bomb downhill.

Hit 43mph on road going down Cabrafea Ski area in Cadillac Michigan area. Seem pretty fast to me. Possibly if roads were wider not curving and clear on both sides. I might be willing to try faster.

Seems possibly to deer, animals, bad roads, wind currents leave diving to above 50 as mysterious to me.
