Bike Registry 529 Garage

I just heard of the "Bike Garage Project 529" in a podcast and signed up. The idea is to register the bike (with pictures etc.) and also attach a sticker.
there isn't a national police database or so, so that is some sort grassroot idea to register bikes. it also has a mobile app. It is free (they said they have law enforcement agencies pay a small subscription).

I registered my bikes and the more people use it the more useful it will be.

Just stumbled on this myself on YouTube. Curious if you have any insights a few years down the road.

I just heard about it and got a "registration kit" (basically, a card explaining what to do to get the app / log in on your computer) and a tamper-resistant sticker for a bike with a registration number on it from Amazon for $10. I figured ten bucks was nothing compared to the cost of the bike, and if it helps get it back should it be stolen, it was money well spent.
You can also record the information about accessories you have (GPS, etc). Actually, I'm glad I was prompted to do so, because I have never written down any of the serial numbers before.

Living in the Vancouver area we have a massive bike theft problem due to the number of junkies and Canada's soft justice system. I've been using 529 Garage since 2018 and, thankfully, I've not had a bike stolen, but I know people who had their bikes recovered and returned (albeit with many parts missed and stripped).

I well recommend this service. Anything to reduce bike theft is to be commended.

I've used it for years and have all my bikes registered. It's not a guarantee that I'd get a bike back if one was stolen, but it certainly won't hurt. Especially since the local police use it now: if they recover a bike of mine odds are very good they'd be able to return it to me since photos, bike descriptions, serial numbers are all registered there.

Any thoughts on bikeindex.org? It seems that 529 Garage started in Canada. Would bikeindex.org be better for US cyclists?

better yet register with both. Get better coverage of cities, agencies and bike shops that use the systems.

Yes, I'm registered with both. I actually registered first with bikeindex.org, then heard about 529 and added my bikes there as well. It was some time later that our local police department connected with 529, so that's more likely to benefit me but there's no downside to registering at both organizations.
