The death of rim brakes, disc brakes now unanimous in the pro peloton...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, come on .... the thread has nothing to do with brakes. It is all about the global bike industry conspiracy to take away our freedom.

I think the Illuminati and the aliens are in cahoots on this one.

Whenever there is a change, some people simply don't like it. Or it takes them some time to get used to it. It's the same with everything new/different. Tubeless tyres, thru' axles, press-fit BBs, electronic shifting, clipless pedals, over-sized headsets, sloping top tubes, wider tyres, carbon frames, dropped seat stays, integrated seat posts, sealed bearings, 1x drivetrains, integral cable routing, wide-range cassettes.

Dougphoto makes the most rational post in this thread, and I make a joke that he probably will become a retro grouch someday (shouting at clouds) and people find offense in that? Unbelievable. If anything, I derided all the retro grouches on this forum, not dougphoto!

Well .... unfortunately for you, you posted at BF .... which is home to numerous cloud-yellers.

I thought the comment was pretty funny .... "Get off my vintage bike's lawn!!!!"---- but here on BF, some people are offended by humor .... and a lot of us are just offended, we'll find a reason (or a patsy) later .....

JUST KIDDING!!!

Even if I post "J/K" I know I will outrage Somebody here .... maybe myself.

I like disc brakes on my gravel bike but don’t find them necessary for a road bike.

It makes sense in a wet drizzly climate where rim brakes are never going to stop you effectively. Road-riding in the midwestern US, though, it's a maintenance headache in a country where bike parts are already overpriced. But such is progress in a world of trade wars.

The biggest thing you can say for disc brakes is it makes for a more versatile road bike. Want a cross bike that does both speed on good surface and whatever on gravel? Having a fast bike that's good for sport riding and takes anywhere from a 25mm to about a 40mm tire and can even be pressed into service with fenders for commuting or riding in winter slop has something to be said for it.

Agreed. What we need are more clinchers vs tubeless threads.

My guess is that this thread has been as useful as it is going to be, it’s seen better days. Closed.
