Whenever there is a change, some people simply don't like it. Or it takes them some time to get used to it. It's the same with everything new/different. Tubeless tyres, thru' axles, press-fit BBs, electronic shifting, clipless pedals, over-sized headsets, sloping top tubes, wider tyres, carbon frames, dropped seat stays, integrated seat posts, sealed bearings, 1x drivetrains, integral cable routing, wide-range cassettes.

Dougphoto makes the most rational post in this thread, and I make a joke that he probably will become a retro grouch someday (shouting at clouds) and people find offense in that? Unbelievable. If anything, I derided all the retro grouches on this forum, not dougphoto!

I like disc brakes on my gravel bike but don’t find them necessary for a road bike.

It makes sense in a wet drizzly climate where rim brakes are never going to stop you effectively. Road-riding in the midwestern US, though, it's a maintenance headache in a country where bike parts are already overpriced. But such is progress in a world of trade wars.
The biggest thing you can say for disc brakes is it makes for a more versatile road bike. Want a cross bike that does both speed on good surface and whatever on gravel? Having a fast bike that's good for sport riding and takes anywhere from a 25mm to about a 40mm tire and can even be pressed into service with fenders for commuting or riding in winter slop has something to be said for it.
