How long(or miles) do those wheels stay true? Just curious. I just built a bike with similar spoke count.

I switched to expensive chain lube after my last chain lasted just a bit over 1000 miles so I added a mud flap so I don’t wreck the new stuff (yes I know it’s silly, and yes I know if I had the flap before I sand blasted my chain with cow poop/sand/water it would have lasted longer but I need an excuse). I gave up on the 11-42 cassette I used ⅔ of in favor of an 11/32 that’s still missing some cogs I want. Anyway things are better now so I guess that justifies the 25$ a bottle chain lube and the $60 Ultegra cassette (let me live my fantasy).

Just finished building this one. Got the frame and fork new on sale. Everything else was bought used. Handsome Devil.

Will have to wait for better weather to ride this bike though.

I have made some very subtle upgrades to this '81 Fuji over the years. Switching to bar-cons was one of the best things I did.

Very much like Hansome Devil's, please share your thoughts of how it rides.

I got the Handsome Devil after watching a friend ride his ''Devil for years. He even managed to save the bike from a house fire. I finally put the money together and they had a sale which I think they still do and bought a frame and fork and built it with used parts. The bike rides beautifully.
I haven't put as many miles on it as I would have liked since here in Minneapolis the streets are still icy. But so far it's everything I'd expected from it. I built it light as possible. I'm no racer. I commute 25 miles a day and do some 3 to 4 day tours occasionally. The 'Devil' should work perfectly. It's not overbuilt yet has everything and more for my use. Should work great for commutes, some gravel riding and touring. The bike takes pretty wide tires.

It's actually attached to a 6 speed XT tumbie .

In friction mode it is compatible; those shifters pull enough cable for pretty much anything, I think. I keep it on there because it makes me smile to have an XTR derailleur on one side and a kickstand on the other, and I like the fact that it's getting daily use. Every time I think about putting something more practical or worth less on the bike, it makes me sad to imagine it sitting on the workbench. (Also, it's the only rapid rise derailleur I have, and I would rather misshift on this bike than on my mountain bike.)

I have a feeling that you chain is cut a tad (couple of links) too short. Some experts here could weigh in.

I focus a lot on my Cross Checks because they’re the perfect geo for me, one is go to work bike which we see in this thread, the other hangs in the cyclocross/Gravel thread. The reality is though the second the weather turns cold or my abused back flairs the Karate Monkey becomes my bestie. The bike has evolved but the reality is that this is the bike I ride when I’m on the verge of driving.

3x to 1x Wide Range Cassette Commuter

99% complete on what was originally a 3x7, 1995 Trek 800 Sport. About 8.5 years (and thousands of miles) later, it is finally the way I envisioned it

Well it happened. My commute got longer…a lot longer. Used to be 8 miles one way and is now 20 miles one way. Which means I needed a new bike.
I forgot to mention one more thing, over half the commute will be hills which is very steep in some areas, so I added a SRAM 10-52 cassette Currently I’m still working from home but that gave me time to plan my build properly.

Ride with the tailwind! Assuming you have a tailwind. Good luck with the build, and remember to show us pics.
