All you have to do is look at someone like Valverde and consider even he is in fact now clean, his alleged past doping likely has benefits now for him.

I doubt that a short "washout period" really puts a person back to zero.

Hard to say with long-term riding clean. 2 years? 5 years?

That is interesting about long-term muscular changes, and a good reason to encourage our kids to get as much exercise as possible.

I don't think this is just about the pros. Doping is common among amateurs. And this has big implications for young racers trying to break into the upper echelons. Dope at low levels of racing where testing doesn't happen. Then dial back doping when you reach the more elite level. Dope in the off season where you can avoid out of competition testing. And if you are caught doping, you may still physiologically be ahead even with a 1 or 2 year suspension from the sport. Implications: lifetime bans, or longer bans. Also lifetime biological passport. Or just give up and it's the wild west. I think the current situation is "don't ask, don't tell." "Just make sure you don't get caught" and we can all pretend the sport is clean.

There is testing at the amateur level - but it's not cheap, and bike racers with $5k+ bikes complain about $5 increase in their annual fees to support it.

Yes, doping happens. Yes, it sucks. Yes, it sticks with you even if you quit.

Meh, cheaters gonna cheat. Doesn't mean they can't be beat.
