Last rider to win the TdF on a Steel Bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok, so I got my Aluminum answer. What about steel?

Pedro Delgado? Or am I off by a lot? Perhaps the first Fignon win? Really, I have no idea.

Pantani was on straight aluminum (not Scandium) so was Ullrich and I believe Riis was aluminum as well.

Without too much Googling, i reckon it's either Riis in 1996 or Ullrich in 1997.
If not, then it's definitely Indurain. Of course, Ullrich and Riis may have ridden both

EDIT: After a bit more Googling, it looks as though it was Indurain in 1994, because of the quote from Pinarello below, unless Riis or Ullrich went back to steel after 1995.

"This was the first TIG-welded steel bike to win the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, which happened in 1993. We also made the first aluminum TIG-welded bike to win both races in 1995. This was the first year we used Oria tubing. "
https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?...ures/pinarello

Pantani mostly rode one like this:

Ullrich's bike looks alu to me, but it could be that Forma steel, which sometimes had big tubes

He won in 1999 on an aluminum. He rode the Bianchi's through 2000. In 2001 and 2002 Mercatone Uno and Pantani were on carbon Williers. In 2003 they may have been on De Rosa's I'm not sure. The glory years were all on Bianchi's though.

I believe Pereiro 'won' the 06 Tour on a magnesium frame. Pinarello Dogma.

You are right. I don't know why I was thinking Pantani but this is what I had bookmarked.

Regardless of who won what, I'll leave steel only when they develop the silk bicycle.

They're called Spinaci bars, and were used as pseudo aero bars in bunch races, but were banned around 2000 because they were deemed too dangerous in a group. It was said that it's harder to reach the brakes in an emergency from that position.
At the time they were banned, the sales of the bars made up 15% of Cinelli's turnover.
