Need compression plug for steel steerer

The compression plug that came with my headset is too small to fit the steerer tube of my steel fork.
Steerer is 1-1/8" with 26.25mm ID. Is there a compression plug that will fit? Would it be better to use a star nut?

Thanks

Your headset manufacturer probably figured on a carbon steer tube with out an aluminum insert. For metal steer tubes you would use a starnut. Any LBS will have them & the tool to install it.

May even do the install job for free, on the spot if you bring them a pack of 6 tasty beverages.

That will work, or a socket wrench socket that will fit in the tube (with a little clearance to get it out again. Put the bolt through the socket to hold it in place, and thwack that thing in with a rubber mallet.

I use a #1 Phillip's screwdriver whose handle is slightly smaller than the ID of the steerer to drive starnuts. Works good and the screwdriver fits through the threading in the starnut, giving you control to keep it driving straight into the steerer.
