Why I will never buy a Lemond Bicycle

Just when you thought that Greg Lemond might go back to cool and impressive past champion mode, he insists on opening up his mouth once more and proving that he is unable to get over the fact that Lance Armstrong has surpasssed him. From Velonews:

LeMond, the first American to win the Tour - he won in 1986, 1989 and 1990 - said that he had come under pressure from Armstrong and his circle of friends after saying in 2001 that he was disappointed at the cyclist's association with Italian sports doctor Michele Ferrari. LeMond said that the threats continued after 2001.

"Lance threatened me. He threatened my wife, my business, my life," LeMond told French sports daily L'Equipe. "His biggest threat consisted of saying that he (Armstrong) would find 10 people to testify that I took EPO."

Note that this threat was supposedly made in 2001 - as in five years ago. Now that's current news - why didn't we hear about this then so Lance could prove it was wrong.

It's funny because Lemond has this cool new bike that it is coming out with. Rest assured Trek that I would never buy such a bike if a single dime of it were to go to a whiner like Lemond.

You know there was a time that I really looked up to and respected Lemond. His place in history is now shrinking by the moment.

And who knows, maybe you'll be saying the same about Lance the demi-god in years to come.

Lemonds actually have hardly anything to do with old man Lemond these days. They've got the special Lemond geometry or whatever, but I doubt Greg himself has much of a say in the product line at all.

edit: pie + pizza > pizza / pie

No, the beef is right. Trek owns Lemond Bikes (and Klein etc) so some Trek designer will design a new Lemond model, then Greg might get to approve the design and that will be about it.

I my steel LeMond Zurich!

They've both said and done some dumb things over the years. Quite honestly, I wish they'd do us all a favor and shut the hell up about each other.

BTW-This story came out of L'Equipe...why you'd take anything they write and post it in here as gospel is beyond me. That piece of crap rag has been trashing Armstrong for years. I think you'd do better to demonize them than LeMond.

Are you being specific, or are you drawing conclusions? I'm not being contrarian, but I am curious. I know that Trek builds the bikes, and I might conject further that they market and distribute the bikes, but I can't say much more than that. If you say Trek owns LeMond Racing Cycles, then do they have the ability to fire him and continue marketing and selling under that brand name? I've always been under the impression that GL was a great bike handler in addition to being somewhat of a student of frame design, a much wasted resource if you and The Beef are correct about the method of Lemond frame design.

This isn't anything new, he's said this before. One of them's lying. But, thanks to these two we will be watching a Tour this year with potential (however far of a stretch it may be) for an American to win the Tour again.

people need to stop swinging from lance's nut just cause Lemond is coming forward does not mean he cannot come to terms with armstrong winning more yellow jersey's please. If you made a bike rest assured I would not buy one from you just cause you're being way overcritical of your demigod.

Hate on Greg Lemond all you want but don't hate on the bikes. I doubt he has much say in the product anyway since Trek owns them. BTW I'm guessing Trek will drop the Klein line for a lance Armstrong bike.

If that's true, then in my eye it would devalue the frames greatly.

Ok, Trek is a Corporation. They own Lemond bicycles. They are staying true with Greg's frame geometries for now but the fact is that Greg Lemond is a figure head for a bike line owned by Trek. Look at the new 2007 bikes. Things are getting blurry between Trek and Lemond. I’m glad I have my steel/carbon bike (Maillot Jaune). As a matter of fact I want to get a Tete also since Lemond doesn’t make them anymore. I think the 2006 Tete De Course is the last of a great bike line.
