Old, original but not good

I suspect I know the answer but how many of you have use parts that were original but didn’t work well when new? My Legnano used a Campagnolo Sport rear derailleur and from what I have read it wasn’t good. Really “not good”. I have a Shimano derailleur that works great but looks odd.

FWIW - this is a Farmers Market bike so super slick shifting isn’t high on the list.

Any sidepull cable braking system on any big-box Sears/J.C. Higgins/Free Spirit/whathaveyou from just about any period.

As for other bits...I can only think of modern parts:
  • SRAM G9 IGH
  • Shimano 5700-series brifters
  • Occasionally cantankerous examples of Shimano 8-speed systems.

Also, in before the inevitable "Nuovo Record RD doesn't work well" crowd (admittedly, it really doesn't).

Misunderstood the question. I'd probably pass on both the Sport and the ugly new Shimano RD and dig up some oddball el-cheapo Italian Nuovo knockoff (e.g. Gian Robert) or install a simple, reliable Suntour RD instead. Keep the look and have better function.

I’ll look into both of those Kurt. Appreciate the input.

I should mention that the original Campagnolo derailleur was a direct mount if that matters.

I think it's a good thing to realize that companies made mistakes.

The only thing that could make the Sport worse would be if Campagnolo had made Syncro insert available for it.

There, I fixed that for you.

Nothing wrong with these although I'm curious what new pads would do to make them even better.
