January 2023 100+ Miles/km Thread

It's hard to believe January 2023 is almost upon us. What are your goals for January?

For me, I'd like to get more miles in 2023 than I did in 2022. So, I'd like to get more miles in January to get that started right, but I somehow got over 950 miles last January! I don't think that's going to happen this year. Put me down for a hopeful 600 miles.

Matt, when you were away there was actually a 2-week stretch where I had more miles than you! Not going to happen again anytime soon.

I managed 200 miles in December, but January should be tougher weather. Last January I rode only 113 miles. So I'll try for 150 miles this year. For total miles in 2024 I'd like to try for 3,000, but it means I need to get off to a good start. In 2022 I had over 2,600 miles, but January and February I rode less than 200 miles total.

Hello. Just want to try this. I'm in Canada so we do kms, in 2022 I did 142kms in January. So this year I will try to do 175kms.

I also hope to drop the lbs I put on for the holidays and a few more. I had started eating better in December and was doing okay but then holidays, so I put on 4 or 5 lbs in a week and a half. At least, that's what my bathroom scale says.

Give it a go. I find a little bit of added incentive to get a ride in so I can update the thread and try to meet my goal. Really helpful to me when the temps are in the 20's and I would much rather watch TV under a blanket.

This made me smile.

I can tell you this. My fitness level dropped during those two weeks. And my body must have gotten used to the reduction of being rattled around every day because it’s talking back a little. Feels like I’ve been playing football, which I was smart enough to give up 30 years ago.

2022 was an off year for me, mainly due to health issues, but the weather here didn't cooperate, either. Going to do my best to get back over 2,000 miles this year.

January Goal: 110 miles
2023 Goal: 2,000 miles

January to date: 0.0 miles

2023 total to date: 0.0 miles
2023 Goal: 2,000 miles

All my miles are outdoor miles.

Back from the dead! 0 miles since November 25. About a month with the flu and after effects, then Xmas! Got a Kickr v5 for myself for Christmas and went to finally use it on Saturday only to find a busted ice maker line had flooded the basement. Luckily didn't damage the Kickr.

Wouldn't let anything keep me from riding today. Not sure what January is going to hold for me, lots of Kickr miles I'm sure. I'll shoot for 150 miles.

1/2 - 14.3 mi

Goal: 150 miles
MTD: 14.3 Miles

Strava says I did 2,764 miles last year, which is 230.3 miles per month. I'm going try to outdo that every month, starting with this one, goal is 250 miles. I would've had a great start to it today, but 11 miles in to what was supposed to be a metric century, my chain dropped, somehow managed to get tangled in the derailleur (and break it), then just for good measure, break a spoke, which pushed its nipple through the rim tape and flatten the (tubeless) tire. Bonus: the chain got seriously jammed between the crank and the chainring (I managed to extricate it, but my near-pristine Aethos is well-scratched now). I learned that a replacement SRAM Force AXS eTap rear derailleur is just north of $300 (on sale), and I need a new derailleur hanger (another $17.50), and it was time for a new chain ($37), plus $27 to replace the spoke and true the wheel. Happy freakin' New Year. I did learn that re-mounting a tubeless tire is much, much messier when there's already sealant in the tire. On the positive side, my driveway will likely never leak. On the more positive side, my new gravel bike is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I may not be too sad about my Aethos' being out of commission for a few days. On the negative side, it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

1/2 - 11.1 miles

MTD 11.1
Monthy Goal: 250 miles

January Goal: 110 miles

1/01 - 10.5 miles - Trek 830
1/03 - 12.9 miles - Trek 800 Antelope (3.3 miles); Fuji (9.6 miles)

January to date: 23.4 miles

2023 total to date: 23.4 miles
2023 Goal: 2,000 miles

All my miles are outdoor miles.

I picked up a 1992 Trek 800 Antelope recently. It was in pretty rough shape, had been sitting in a garage collecting dust, hadn't been ridden in years... Below is the thread about it if anyone is interested. Photo in post # 24.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ope-800-a.html

I already had three bikes, but all 3 are set up for the road. This one will be my trail bike.

I had a incident with one of my bikes, changed out the chain, rear derailleur, tightened and straightened the hanger, still had problems shifting. Had to get a new shifter. Good thing that I had a spare chain and rear derailleur. The shifter set me back $300, I haven't installed it yet be it came with a new hydraulic brake so I won't have to drain and refill the system with hydraulic fluid, I think.

Well, good luck with that and get it back on the road.

The forecast said 30% chance of rain, and it looked like it was going to be more than that when I went outside, but with this bike, newly assembled and eager to hit the road, I decided that taking it out for a maiden voyage was worth getting wet, if it came to that. And it did. But even though I just rode on pavement, it was a fun, albeit damp, ride. The Di2 shifting is different from the SRAM eTap on my Aethos (And in 13 miles, my new power meter says I cranked an average of 156 watts. Gotta clean up the bike (and myself) now.

A shorter ride today. A couple of friends came over to ride with us, but after about 4 miles, one of them says "Uh, it's been a long time since I rode a bike, think it's time for me to head back." So we did.

1/5: 17.3

Finally got a ride in this month. It has been very wet all week. Conditions were still not ideal tonight, with a cold (35F) drizzle. At least the MUP wasn't crowded, although almost got run into by a guy on an electric scooter that came up from behind very fast (maybe 20 mph) without announcing himself. Spotted his headlight in my rear view mirror at the last minute.
