Miyata? Good Bike?

I found this on craigslist, it's near by and in my price range. $100. Is it worth the money? Thanks!

This what the seller said:

mens bike (miyata)
fram 23"
tires 27" Made in Japan.

Probably, but the seller gave you just about nothing to go on. Miyata made a lot of models, from bottom end to high end. The good news with a clueless seller is that you might get lucky and it is something special. Just about any Miyata is worth $100, but the bottom end ones are not worth much more. Is it ready to ride? Does it fit?

Since it is nearby, why not go look at it? If it is a good deal, it won't last long.

That's what I was thinking. I believe it's in working order and it does fit me... the problem is that I'm in college and it's long long long walk through some sketchy neighborhoods to get there.

If it were a low end Miyata in good condition, how would it compare to a Schwinn Varsity (another bike I'm looking at) in good condition.

Better than a Varsity. If it fits and is in good shape, easily worth the C.

+1 No comparison really. Any Miyata will be a better bike than the Varsity. And for each of these features that the Miyata has, it will be better and better: alloy rims, cromoly frame (it will be labeled), alloy crankset, downtube shifters, alloy seat post, alloy handlebars, etc. I would not expect it to have all of these features at $100 (it may not have any of them). If you don't know how to recognize these features, just spend a few minutes on google, and you will be an expert in short order. Look for rust, and basic condition. Ride it and make sure it fits. I paid a lot more than $100 for my college bike back in 1975.... And it was no better than that Miyata, and probably worse!!

I would agree the miyata is worth $100. If it is in riding condition right now, you will be quite happy with the bike. Can't see much from the picture, but it looks to be in pretty decent shape. I've have a miyata, and love the bike. At the very least, go check it out and give it a ride.

Get the Miyata...you will love it and also be able to pass on a good bike if you decide to sell it later. Good luck!

For anyone who was interested... The bike turned out to be a One Ten Miyata in near perfect condition. It does have downtube shifters and a cromoly frame. For a 100 dollars, I think it was a great deal. It will suit my needs perfectly and is so much lighter than my Free Spirit. I'll try to post some picture soon.

Sounds like a really good deal and a huge step up from the FS.

After looking through some old catalogs online, I'm pretty sure it's an '84. Just thought I'd share that.

You got a chrome-moly frame with (presumably) alloy wheels and crank for $100? You got a great bike!

Looks like early Shimano 600, but my memory is pretty fuzzy as my (Japanese made) Bianchi had Suntour and Dia-Compe on it. The rims are probably 700 and not 27. The only advice I'd give is not to rely on the brake extensions. Nice bike.

Nice bike. Congrats! Appears to be a 1984.

Here is a link to a catalog page about your bike.

Haha, yep, I actually used those catalogs to figure out the year already.

So far it's serving me well.

Condition looks great! Amazing how many older bikes turn up with original tires, often uncracked and still supple.

(psst: welcome to the cult! Have you gotten your tatoo yet?)
