I contemplated on getting Northwave Extreme shoes last year. Quiet an investment at $300+ a pair, but decided against it since I ride bikes with both MTB and road pedals. So for the past couple of years I've gone with regular road/MTB shoes with neoprene shoe covers, and when necessary a think chemical warmer inside. Granted, my winter commute is less than an hour.
Not so much prepping for winter; just sort of adding on to whatever else I have--a pair of insulated long bibs, replacing worn out socks, mittens, etc.

My winter/icy condition running shoes have small screws embedded right into the sole. Cheap $2 solution. Must make sure they're 1/4" or shorter so as not to completely puncture the sole.

I'm thinking that I'm going to pick up some shoes from 45NRTH, which is based in my area (along with every other QBP company). Just need to track some down locally so that I can see how they fit. If no one has them in my size, I guess that I'll do the internet back and forth shipping and hope that I don't waste a couple weeks sorting it out. The ones that I want are the Japanthers, a 'transitional season' shoe, but I've read reviews from people in my area that have used them year-round.

Does anyone have experience with Lake's shoes? For winter was looking at these CX145.. with extra 22% off these only come to $100 (from normally supposedly $250).
Lake CX145 Road Shoes
My dilemma is size choice. I usually wear a size 14 US.. which eg. translates to a 49 in Giro (and same I think in Sidi). According the size chart and Lake's website, they only make 48 or 50 (size 13 or 15 US).. kinda annoying.

I've got a pair of Shimano MW02 shoes that I find very comfortable, almost to the point where I'd wear them year-around.
But they've taken a beating with the leather and the wet winters around here.
I do like the neoprene tops. I'm sure they get wet, but my feet feel comfy.
Last spring I found a pair of the newer model MW81 shoes at a good price, so the old ones will likely soon be discarded. I guess I need to get the cleats mounted, and break them in before the next big ride.

Best winter buys have been electrically heated soles and bar mitts.
Have some Lake 303s, wide.
Tricky thing about those IMO is the soft lining. Shoes that felt merely nicely snug in the shop turned out to be too tight for longer rides. Like having your foot smothered by a soft cushion.

I am happy with my Northwave winter shoes too. Mine are 6-ish years old. Paid $170 I think.
I got 1/2 size bigger for thicker socks and toe room.
On a few very cold days, I was able to fit my old neoprene covers over them, for an extra layer.
BF also has a "Winter" forum.

I thought about getting ready for winter and will probably stop using sunscreen soon in the next few weeks.

I bought a pair of Grip Grab Arctic shoe cover hoping they will keep my feets warm this winter. Kast winter I had a pair of Gaerne wintershoes. They were warm but my knees couldnt cope with the stiff shoe top (boots)

I'm moving to a mid atlantic state from the southern gulf coast, I bought some insulated tights and some overshoes. Hopefully those work + jacket for some year round riding.

This thread is timely. I've been realizing I need to get some warmer shoes very soon. As far as what I already have - I picked up a used pair insulated cycling gloves on the 'bay last fall, as well as some new wool socks. Man what a difference. Definitely a couple of the best cycling investments I've ever made.

I took my gloves out last night. Went for a ride, wished I'd worn a jacket.

Darn Toughs socks are great. They run really tight but are high quality. My favorite is Rapha Deep Winter merino (warmest) and the new Specialized winter socks, which are prob a little behind Darn Tough in quality but they are warm. What I need are winter boots. I have narrow feet so boots like the 45NRTH Wolvhammers are seriously wide and don't fit me. The Specialized winter boots are horrible...I cannot believe they even sell those. So I am still looking for good winter shoes that are slightly insulated and windproof. I have everything else...warm tights, gloves, beanies, jackets, socks, and jerseys. I can ride down to 20 degrees. I don't particularly enjoy road biking below that at all, though I will take my fat bike on mountain bike trails or even my mtn bike on dry trails. Let's see how low I go this winter on the road.
