Very nice! Definitely the Roadkill way to do things ("Don't get it right, get it running [first]."). Looks like you and I will have a contest to see who's anodization (rims) wears off first. My bet is mine does. :/

I missed this post! Awesome to see it on the road. How's it ride? Any other work completed on it since you took this ride?

It rode very nicely and really responded to pedal input I didn't do much more than made sure it shifted ans stopped and had air in the tires. Don't think I will take it out again until its had the full tear down. I have tires and bar wrap on the way and already have cables, housing and a new chain to go with the new FW. I need to finish my Trek 520 and then it will be the Allez's turn.

The sticker on the seat tube should say Japan or Taiwan. My 88 Allez in made in Japan but my 88 stumpjumper and 89 Hardrock Comp is Taiwan.
I have an 89 catalog If you need any info but I believe the UK scan online covers it all.
love the red.

I recently finished refurbing a 1987 Trek 520 so now the Work Stand was free for the 1989 Allez. The only problem is that I had been taking it for short morning rides and it was so much fun to ride it kept not going into the Work Stand!

So this morning I took a last ride on the Allez as is and put it into the work stand.

To be sure I don't take it out again before the refurb I started taking it apart

Still need to remove the crank BB and Head set but I hope it will won't be long before its ready for all the new parts...

Yeeesss! Awesome. I am so excited to see the final product. It's going to look so good. I just sold my Sirrus to free up space before my move. I am sad that you, RiddleOfSteel and I won't be able to have our red Specialized ride, but we'll need to get sometime once it's safe. And have we talked about your Handsome Cycles 1x? I have been a fan of theirs for years. I'd love to see more pics. Do you have a thread on it?

tricky we can still do the ride regardless, congrats on the sale of the SIrrus! I am pondering a conversion of the Allez to a compact double to make it more Seattle and old man friendly -we'll see. I figure since its torn down anyway..... I will keep all the stock parts of course.

Love my Handsome Devil in 1x9 its my workhorse bike and just keeps going despite not getting all the attention it probably should. Rack that takes panniers, 700x47c tires that float over the crumbling pavement, 9 speed Dura Ace bar end shifter in friction mode.

Looking forward to that ride! That Sirrus had a compact double and ran a Wolftooth Roadlink on the rear to be able to shift a 34 tooth cassette. Tons of low gear. It was pretty great spinning Seattle hills.

Looks fun! Sometimes those low maintenance work horses are the bikes that get grabbed the most.

Well as Bugs Bunny would say "eh ya getting warmer Doc" the frame has been frame savered, cleaned, a few bare spots touched up and finally waxed, The headset is cleaned and rebuilt and back on the bike so the frame and fork can come together and a few parts have even started being hung... I am hopeful of getting to the finish line during the upcoming long weekend.

Looking good! The Vero crankset is a modest design--no undue flash which is nice on a non-shouty bike (minus the red, naturally). The 34T should help considerably, putting you at essentially the same ratio (using a 34-25 low) as a 39-28 low (what I normally set my bikes up with), which will climb some un-fun stuff. And failing that, a triple will be easily handled by down tube shifters.

Well I am very close. Did a shake down cruise this morning of about 4 miles and shifting is about 70% there. The good news is it shifts fine between the 50 and 34 up front, I just need to dial in some dodgy shifts in the mid range out back. It was fun to finally ride it after the refurb and it sure does like to run.

I finally got around to putting on the bar tape so for now I am going to call the Allez Fin! It has some iffy shifts in the 21t and 23t cogs but I am going to live with that for now. After all I have paired a 1989 Suntour GPX drive train to a new SunRace 7 speed FW so maybe perfection isn't realistic. This bike makes me feel fast and it is allot of fun for blasting along the flats.

When I was in the Army, I got 2 really good trades for a 6 pack-

One was a whole drawer full of comics- to include Spider Man 300 and 1-22 of Wolverine.

The other was an old Excelled leather biker jacket- soft supple leather. I had that thing for 25 years- the pockets had ripped out, the shoulder was tearing out- a friend borrowed it for a costume- it fit him perfectly- he was going to get all the torn stitching repaired, I told him it was his- take care of it and pass it on when you're done with it in 25 years. He now works at Harley Davidson.

You definitely do need to try it! Pfriem and Chuckanut (where the head brewer at Pfriem apprenticed at) in the PNW both use traditional decoction mashing which is the OG method that the old school continental lager brewers use. Gonna need to pickup some more Pfriem now that I'm talking about it!

I love what you did with this bike. It's definitely making my Monday feel less Monday-ish. You did it more justice than I would have! And gotta love those bikes that feel fast! My Sirrus felt fast but more "planted to the earth" fast instead of "playful, lively fast." Maybe yours is more the latter with those box section rims.

Thanks Man I would not have had the chance to rebuild this without your generosity

Definitely feels lively fast for me but that could be because I am used to riding touring type bikes with tires 32 cm or wider so the 23s on the Allez just feel fast but the whole bike is built for speed so its a fun change to blast on, Not the bike for hills or hauling but if you want to blast on the flats or rollers then it does that just fine.

I am already thinking that in the winter maybe I will experiment with a wolfs tooth on the RD hanger and pair that to a 28t FW just to get a lower gear while keeping the GPX drive train but for now I am just going to ride it in the summer sun and smile

I mentioned before about "iffy shifting" and I realized a SunRace 7 speed FW paired with Suntour GPX indexing was not a match made in heaven. It was iffy enough it me put off riding this fine steed so I looked for options to fix it. 1) the cheap option would have been getting a 7 speed Suntour corncob FW with a 21t big cog for about $35 but that wasn't going to work for me. 2) A wider range 25t big cog Suntour FW was about $125 and up when I could find them! too expensive 3) finally I could swap out the right shifter and RD to a Shimano 105 7 speed of the same era. With the help of a BF member for the shifter (thanks malcala622 for being the 3rd BF member to contribute to this bike!) and ebay for the RD I was able to get both parts for under $50. Operation Transplant went off with a minimum of tears and I am happy to report the bike now indexes to ALL 7 gears with zero Iffyness ! The nice thing is that both groups, 105 and GPX, went gray anodized so they pass the 10 foot test and aren't an obvious mismatch of parts. Now I just need to ride the Allez while the sun shines.

RD swap

Right shifter swap
