Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Tarmac(opinions on 2nd bike choices)

2006 Specialized Tarmac Expert Gerolsteiner. Looks to be in fantastic shape. Seller says it was used indoors it’s entire life (aside from this past year). Full Ultegra set. Kyserium wheels.

Seller asking $1200. What’s a reasonable price for this bike?

I think my LBS has a 2020 Tarmac still in stock for about that price. Might be wrong, maybe it's a little higher. Regardless, you can get new bikes for that price. Are you a decent enough cyclist to really be able to tell the difference between why that bike might have been a great bike back in it's day and what might be considered a lower tier bike today?

Seems high for old stuff. Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105 or what ever the component groups are on it aren't the same today as they were then.

your LBS has a 2020 full carbon fiber bike for $1200? I think the Tarmac was $2900 new in 2006

I’m new to cycling. Just looking for a spare bike.Currently riding a 2012 Felt AR5 carbon bike

I would say 5-600. This is a 15 year old bike that was probably ~$2000 when new.

Carbon bikes have been getting less expensive for years. They've been trickling down to lower tiers as production costs and methods allow easier and better manufacturing methods. Steel and aluminum reached a peak for their technologies to get less expensive many years ago. Maybe another break through will come in the future for them. But carbon technology still has a lot of manufacturing breakthroughs to come, many that will further push carbon frames to the lower tier bikes.

As for my claim you quoted, don't forget the disclaimer.....
Might be wrong, maybe it's a little higher.
If I go there again, I'll check. But I thought I saw it as I left the store last week. Didn't get give it but a distant glance while walking out.

Here are some comments on another old bike for sale that are my general concerns with a purchase of an old bike. Especially if you are not a decent DIY'er with some experience adjusting and replacing DR's, cranksets and other components.

My advice would be to save up a bit more and get something newer. Older bikes like that have very little upgrade potential without spending large amounts on wholesale changes, and will still be limited to some extent (disc brakes, for example).

A bike used for that long indoors would be the perfect target for corrosion from sweat. I've seen the horror stories on SlowTwitch.

If you're talking about Di2 vs. mechanical, yes, there are some nice differences...until you forget to charge your Di2 battery - LOL. Old mechanical groups vs. new mechanical groups aren't very different at all. The 20+ year-old, 9-speed Dura-Ace on my daughter's road bike still performs extremely well. The 10-speed Dura-Ace on my old Time road also performs extremely well. The 11-speed Campy Record on my newer Storck road bike does not perform significantly better than either of the old Dura-Ace groups.

I def don’t NEED another bike, but have been poking around looking for a second bike to both have something else to ride...and to have something to ride if my current bike breaks and/or needs a repair.

Used bike prices seem to be super high here in NY...I’m assuming it’s pandemic related. I paid $750 for my Felt AR5 a few months ago

Theres also mint condition CAAD12 listed for $1200. Not sure of year yet.

I'm sorry, but that is a $500 bike at best.

The TCR is more like it. Worth upgrading, if the fancy takes you

Well…the quest for another bike continues.

Found a 2010 Fellt AR4 with Di2 ultegra electronic shifting. Kysirum wheels. $1200….but it’s a 2.5hr drive. Anyone have thoughts?
