Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Man, now I need to have a deviled egg hand-up during a ride, sometime.

I had a record low rise-and-shine weigh in of 155.5 this morning. Now after a proper breakfast, 16oz of water, and 16oz of coffee I'm back up to 157.5.

HA! I need to find some of that! "Cactus ice cream with horribleberry pie" was Dad's standard answer whenever we kids would ask "What's for dessert?" Just have to figure out what 'horribleberries' are.

This is why I only weigh myself completing my Three S's - s***, shave, and shower.

Kudos!

I've been back to tracking my calories and, for the last two or three weeks, I've been consistently sub-180, which is about as low as I've been as an adult. Aiming for 170 in the spring, with the inclusion of a little extra muscle mass.

I did have a little retention blip of some kind, though, that had me hit 181.x yesterday (down to 180.x today). Must be pilfered Halloween candy lodged in my gut.

I enjoy eggs in many forms.

Our local cafe makes an excellent Japanese egg salad sandwich.

I decided I'm comfortable with how I look and how I ride at 200# - Still Too Fat For This Sport! - because I'm finding that even late in longer rides, climbs that I used to crawl up at 6-8 mph that would leave me gassed at the top I can now do at almost 12 mph and get to the top feeling much better.

Yeah, I hear ya. Over the last 4-5 years, I've done similar, spending time content at a certain weight, but then ultimately moving down after a while. Spent a year happy to be under 200. Then decided that 190 would be better. Spent a year happy to be at 190, etc, I spent most of 2021 in the low-to-mid-180s - enjoying the opportunity to not scrutinize what I'm eating all of the time. The winter is where it can get dangerous for me, though, so I decided to get hands back on the reins and shoot for 170. Ultimately, I'd like to get to an FTP at 4w/kg; I think I'll be able to, but managing the denominator is going to be a significant part of that.

Ventured outside today. Conditions were far from perfect, chilly and windy and then it started to rain. I stayed close to the hotel just to get some confidence. Cars weren’t aggressive but the roads were terrible. Massive cracks which led me to having to slow down to navigate. Where I am at there is no shoulder, the road ends with a curb on the side. I have some loops planned based on heat maps but it’s suppose to rain tomorrow.

Gunna try and do a long zwift ride and then head over to mellow johnies in the morning.

The Irving area is known for heaving soils which can mess with the roads. Other areas as well. I'm always watching for cracks that run with the road in order to keep the tires out of them, especially on the rural roads.

You're in Dallas, right? I hear if you look like a dead celebrity you're likely to be mobbed by some strange people, today.

I also am at record lows of late. I had my pic taken with the touring cyclists this morning, and am shocked at my thinness. I might make an effort to put some of that weight back on. There's an oxymoron for you. Me making an effort to put on weight. 170 @ 6'. 180 would be much better, I think.

From here, it all looks the same. Like when there's a wildfire in Malibu and my family asks if I'm okay, 8 hours drive away.
