The situation to evaluate guys like Musk is first hand in a competitive situation with others who are as smart, wealthy and driven who have experience in the areas of discussion. Musk is highly competitive intellectually with others and is able to field questions and generate responses that sell. And I am not talking about his BS conference calls he does with analysts about Tesla but the early investors in SpaceX that have teams of space experts.
I listened to Musk talk and met him. He would be a great guy to hang out with however hard to keep up with both intellectually and financially. And a tyrant to work for but not without its rewards.
I have met a lot of Musk types. They are all highly driven and focused. They are almost unstoppable.
Musk is unique in his vision across industries. He disrupted payments with PayPal and space with SpaceX. He has Solar City and Tesla and the Boring Company drilling holes underground in high traffic areas to alleviate traffic congestion. Fintech, Space, Electric power and transportation is a broad portfolio of disruption and success.
I think life sciences has to be next. He may want to live forever. Why not?

Sorry I'm about to get geeky lol.
SpaceX has advanced more in 10 years than NASA and RosCosmos has in the last 40.
Musk gets all the credit but Tom Mueller (his first engineer who recently retired) really should get more. He make engines as a hobby and as a job. His first day testing the first prototype SpaceX rocket, he fired it up at the test site. After the successful test, he told the testers, "We have this place for a day, lets fire it up again." The testers were shocked as that's never happened. Testing continued and ultimately showed the rockets could be reusable. Definitely worth a read if you can find more on him.
Hopefully this one sticks!

We had a guy like that at work. Three sexual harassment complaints and he just kept moving up the ladder. Anyone that tried to stop him would face consequences. Some good people lost jobs trying to do the right thing. Eventually he moved on, but I suspect something happened in the background that was hush hush.

The issue, imho, is the elevation of people like Musk into other facets/spheres of knowledge. Being good at what he does doesn't magically translate to other things too.
Then again, Americans seem to care more about entertainment value these days than anything else.

I’m reading Billion Dollar Loser right now about WeWork and Adam Neumann. I also read Bad Blood about Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes. Definitely seems to be a cult of personality among many of these people.

Do you mean in the 33 or BF at large? If the latter, it's about as diverse as the broader human population. This is based on more than a few years of moderating and seeing what kind of weirdos (IMO) are really out there. @gsteinb can attest

In Geeky news, we got a new ICP mass spectrometer yesterday! I'm so excited, and so is my group; we're tired of troubleshooting and toiling over our old Thermo (X series). After some involved market research we decided to go with Agilent this time. Engineer on site to setup/familiarize next week, applications scientist later in the month to help us explore analytical challenges and dive into the single-particle mode, which will be huuuuuge for the company at large/.
stoked!!!

Other than the buddies I've met on audio forums, then with our amps, and the soccer dads who I saw near weekly and posted with near nightly, I don't know any person in my social world that does forum stuff. Periodically a BF person at a race will ask if I'm Doge simply because my son is there. What is interesting is they seem to think I'm more normal than they expected.

I think those that do forums are a bit different than the general population.

That said, they've all been pretty normal, great people in real life. In fact a few of them, I still talk with regularly, even if they're not on the forums.

I've met several people on this forum in person: TMonk, MattM, Teton, Rwaki, GStein, Wanders, Rankin, Chappie.... to name a few. Several of those people are not that active anymore. (Doge, I believe you've met my wife at one or two collegiate national championships)

While forum posters are "normal" great people, it is not common. Posting on forums is a smaller segment of the overall population. Unless you think Facebook, and Instagram are forums. I think they are different as forums are typically based on a focus.
I first heard about forums from soccer parents who were discussing posts. For them (me included) it was something many of us did. It was much more discussed than Facebook. I'd guess 50% of the folks I'd meet in elite soccer would also be posting about their kids and soccer stuff.
Other than that - nobody I know, outside of meeting on forums (and soccer parents) posts on them.
Many have Facebook, Instagram, and Linked-in accounts. Not the same to me. Close if it is a group, but it is still not the same.

I find that Forums are often a great tool for dealing with issues. Car forums, in particular, are great for that. I recently bought a new car and wanted to install a tow hitch. I went on the forum for that vehicle and learned the differences - in layman's terms - between the OEM and aftermarket options, and tricks to the install. I found where to get the best price on and OEM hitch as well as a trick to massively simplify the install. Took me less than 30 min. total.
I use this forum a bit differently, since most of us here are very experienced, and we contribute enough that it's possible to get a sense of people's personalities, which makes it fun to banter.

About the only electronics stuff I've done in 10 years is replacing some switches in my amp's foot pedal controls.

Been geeking out on hand plastic surgery information.
The procedure below is what I will most likely get on Thursday. The plate is so small it is kinda cute.

Anyone here play Rocket League? I've been getting into it a little more seriously lately, it's super fun. Really addictive, to be able to improve at something requiring skill like that. I still suck, but I'm getting much better.
Speaking of rockets, SN15 launches tomorrow maybe? I'm not sure.
Edit: looks like it slipped again, maybe static fire Monday, launch Wednesday or Thursday.

I've played it before, fun game but I'm horrible at it.
I avoid videogames when I am trying to race because they hook me in and then all of a sudden I haven't touched my bike in a week but I have a new level 60 wizard!
Also, shooters and games like Rocket League are about the same time commitment because it takes about that time for you to learn the maps, timing, and nuances to actually enjoy it.

There's games I can just screw around on (CoD, GTA, Bioshock, Fallout) and then there's online stuff that everyone gets really good at, and then there's e-sports games (like Rocket League) that everyone gets REALLY good at.
There's definitely a lot to learn to be good, but I was having fun even when I didn't really know what I was doing, just driving around hitting the ball.

Thing Three is addicted to Rocket League. It's a cool game. I haven't put in the time to learn it.
BTW: I recently moved to a new job, back into the games industry, working on NBA 2K as a director (at Visual Concepts, owned by 2K, owned by Take2), as we grow a new Austin Studio from a recent acquisition.
