Rescued Trek 613 almost NOS

Hello chapesses and chaps,
a few months ago a rescued a pair of 1982 Trek’s a large 614 and a smaller 613 his and hers from a couple, they had not been used for some time, the Big Red 614 had seen some use and that’s for another day.. the 613 was reported as having only been used 2 times about 40 miles worth then put away. I am in the process of re-commissioning this lovely thing for my wife to use, here are some pictures I think the frame paintwork speaks for itself..

they were both set up for touring with a Sugina AT triple front crankset with Suntour cyclone mkII on both …
what a lucky guy to find these and although on big red first impressions are not good maybe it will be better than it looks.

All original reynolds sticker

Badges we don’t need no stinkin badges(movie ref)

What does the black Label signify?

Original decals are starting to peel at the back suggestions on how to preserve would be welcomed

Original tires are for sale lol!!

6speed

500 G brakes I believe

Rack has been made to fit any suggestion how to get it level this bugs me.

Lovely transfer still intact, rear Mech is as good but rear transfer has lost some letters

Fully campy cable guides lol but that’s it no mo campy anywhere else

Congratulations! Beautiful bike!

Around 10 years ago I bought a front rack from a couple that was selling a couple of matching 600 series bikes-

A few thoughts...

40 year old tires are a bomb waiting to go off.

Trek had a connection with Blackburn to make racks specifically for models and sizes of bikes. Blackburn made adjustable racks with both single and double adjustable stays to the seat stays/brake bridge- they also made non-adjustable racks in (I believe) 3 sizes- if any of those 3 sizes were close, you were lucky. It looks like your bike had been outfitted with an aftermarket rack in not quite the right size.

The screening/printing on the Suntour components of this era will fall off if you look at them too intently. I've coated mine with clear nail polish- they look fine 5+ years down the road, however I don't know if the clear will yellow over time.

the rear rack is a Blackburn rack same on the 613… no front rack unfortunately I think it’s the wrong size rack, I’m thinking I can add a small extension to the rack mounts to effectively level the rack. A one or two inch extra length would work … the tires for sale was a joke hence the “lol” I was just showing the original tires were on it ..

There's people who love old tires. There was someone here that wanted to buy my "National Panaracer Duo" tires from 1986. I bought a wheel set with a set of Specialized "Expedition" 27 x 1 3/8" and "Touring" 27 x 1 1/4" tires- And they rode REALLY nice. But they were super dry and I knew every time I rode them I was gambling with my front teeth.

As far as the rack... any kludge is going to look like a kludge- and that bike is in such nice shape. I'd just search for and buy either a 21" Trek rack or an adjustable one. If'n it were me, I'd get an adjustable one with the stays going to seat stays.

Here's a fun rack thread:

Nice score!! FYI, the black label on the rim you asked about is (rigida) the manufacturer of the rim and the size wheel/tire

thanks but yeah he knew that much, I believe they had three different colored labels red blue and black hoping black means heavy duty..

i think rigida are not considered robust.

Okay. The question wasn't clear to me, but now I understand. I don't know the significant between label colorings. However, Rigida made good rims. My '82 614 came with the black label, IIRC, and Sunshine Gyromaster hubs....which by standards of the time were considered nice hubs to have. IOW's, Trek mated quality parts of the time with the line up of their mid range models. I can't see you having any issues with those rims though they are single wall.

I'm sure if you started a thread about it someone around here could say for sure. Some of these guys...what they know....blows my mind. I mean, I enjoy vintage bikes and stuff, but I don't geek out quite that much. And, I say that affectionately...lol

BTW, turns out the ones I had were blue labeled. But, I think Trek place the 614 a slight step "above" the 613 in terms of frame material and component selection. Just a guess, but maybe the blue label were a bit lighter.

614 over a 613

your right the 614 was a notch above the 613..
both these bikes the 614&613 have black label Rigida both were set up for touring so I’m hoping heavier rims better for touring..

i just measured the two racks both silver Blackburn racks and I notice the rack on the bigger frame is tilted back ever so slightly and the smaller frame is tilted forwards because it’s too big…. I’m like NOOO.. way I measure the two racks they got them switched up big on little and little on big, I won’t know for sure till I switch them but I may have found the solution..
