Suntour FWs - Paging Pastor Bob
pastorbobnlnh
What do I have here? I searched online and came back blank.
These Suntour freewheels have been sitting around for years. Now I'd like to put them to use.
First is a Suntour??? 13-30T 6 speed freewheel stamped 8.8.8 GI in the adjustment ring. It's NOT one of the 1970's 8.8.8 FWs. The back sides of the sprockets are stamped INDEX A30, INDEX A24 and so on. It was NOS. I used it briefly but took it off to send to Pastor Bob to have him to take out a shim or two to remove the wobble. What is it? Is it any good?
Next is a 7 speed 13-28T FW stamped SUNTOUR POWERFLO SR SAKAE. The sprockets are nicely ramped so it should shift well. The overall width is 36.5mm but the lock ring is 2mm thick and the rear is recessed 1.5mm. Theoretically it's 34mm wide. The sprockets have 7 splines which probably makes it a bâtard with regards to finding replacements - a 30T would be nice. Is this a good freewheel?

The 4 spline removal tool suntour freewheels I've come across were part of the accushift indexing system.

Suntour Accushift
"New Improved" ??? (more expensive)
FBOATSB GI = September, 1990, that would make sense.

I think the spacing on the cogs is ever so slightly different than a Shimano equivalent and will not index with the other system. I had to run a non ideal range accushift freewheel on my suntour gpx equipped centurion ironman here because it was the only one that would work with the cable pull ratios.

Chaz, unfortunately, I have limited to no experience with these late-model Suntour freewheels. I have serviced a few Powerflo freewheels. I found that the internal machining and finish was not as precise as earlier Suntour models such as ProCompe, Winner family, and Alpha freewheels. Even most of the ubiquitous Perfect models had better finish.
Interestingly, as you will note in your pictures, one utilizes the four-notch removal tool and the Powerflo (last version of a Suntour freewheel) the older two-notch tool. This feels like a step backwards. Why did this occur? I can't answer my question.
Last summer, I came across these two Powerflo 7 speed. Both used the same lockring (a BB tool can be used for removal) to secure the sprockets. However, one was two-notch and the other was four-notch. One would assume Suntour would have been consistent.

I want to say that those Powerflo freewheels were manufacturing backwards for the previous Accushift shifting system that used cassettes...? What is really odd is the Taiwan and SR markings. Was this a particular Asian market item for a Taiwanese manufacturer such as Giant, KHS or maybe even for a later SR source-out bikes?

Verktig,
Contact Wes Barnes (WGB), he is looking for the Accushift model freewheel you have. My experience is they are harder to find in today's markets. Smiles, MH
