Attempting my first headset bearings maintenance

Hi All

I took my road bike (aethos pro) out while the roads were still wet and now the steering feels sandy and I hear a whooshing noise when I turn the handlebars.

I am going to attempt to service the headset and re apply some grease. Is it as simple as this
makes it sound. Also and tips on how to perform this without a repair stand?

when I swapped the fork on my MTB I was in there, of course. it wasn't too bad. take your time

it was a bit of a juggling act, w/ all the spacers & the bars & the cables, etc. be sure the floor is clean in case you drop anything. might be nice to have a table nearby in case you want to put something down

It is a little bit of a juggling act, but very doable. Just be sure and really clean it up before you put new grease in or it will all be for naught. Good luck

I have some old toe clip straps, but any strap will work, and use them to support the handlebars and fork and not the brake cable, of worse yet a hydraulic brake hose.

Also take a photo of your brake and shift cable routings around the front of the head tube before taking everything apart if you think you may forget how they go. Same with stem spacers, bearing orientation etc.

Yes. As others have stated, get all the surfaces the bearing cartridges will touch very clean before installing the new bearing cartridges. And if you haven’t taken a treadless stem off before, when reinstalling make sure to tighten down the cap before tighten the pinch bolts for the stem that hold it to the steerer. It can be a bit awkward, but it is not hard to do. Good luck.
