I am a member of a bike touring group on Facebook. Over the weekend someone posted a link to North Face tent with the word "Assault" in the name. Assault, of course, is a mountaineering term. Can you believe someone took issue with the use of the word? *smh*

I was an instructor at automotive trade schools for a few years. Some people have mechanical aptitude, some do not. Some can look at mechanical assemblies and understand how the parts work together, even if they are not familiar with that machine.
At the dealer we had trainee kids come in from trade schools and even high school programs. We had a young man fresh from trade school with a huge student debt and he was totally helpless in the shop. He couldn't work with tools and even when he was shown what to do, he failed.
We tried giving him simple jobs. There was a hatch strut recall on the Volt. Just lift the hatch and pop off two lock rings and put the new struts on. It paid .2. He couldn't do it. I did it for him several times, he still couldn't do it. I gave up.

I am not a 'football'* fan, but I was rather hoping Hamilton would prevail in this one, simply because the city is just an hour or so down the way from me (401 East to 403 > Hamilton).
Trivial fun fact: were you aware the Canadian 'Football' League is contemplating a change to four downs, from the Canadian traditional three downs? The stated rationale appears to be that doing so would increase fan appeal.
Second trivial fun fact: my home town/university Mustangs won the Vanier Cup a week ago ... Canadian university 'football' championship. As I understand it, this is the eighth time the Mustangs have won this venerable trophy.

This past weekend concluded my daughter's fall softball season. For the next few weeks, it looks like I'll be able to spend a lot more time on the bike. I'm hoping to get back to doing 100+ mile weeks again.

The part that is transitive is the ability to understand how things work together and how to use tools to remove and replace parts. Someone who has experience wrenching on one type of machine will have an advantage when switching to another type of repair.

Yeah, you see that in watchmaking. There are skills you need, like very fine motor skills, a lot of patience, and the ability to visualize how something that is not currently working works, not to mention a logical approach to diagnosing a problem. Some things you can do by rote, but a lot of it requires a pretty deep understanding of how things fit together and work together.
Sometimes the problem is in the software. Sometimes the factory is aware and writes a new program, easy peasy. Sometimes they are not aware and don't believe some disgruntled old technician in Los Angeles even when tech support agrees with him. So they make him replace every part which could be involved then make him drive 2 field engineers around for hours while they look at their laptops.
I just love reliving this stuff.

I haven't been to the witch doctor's office for a few months, as the infusion nurse quit. I got a few notices about needing another appointment. I tried calling a couple times, but got sent to voice mail. So I went by the office to see what was going on.
It took the person at the desk a couple minutes to figure out what was going on. At any rate, apparently he's booked until April. My appointment isn't until May. Good thing I don't have any pressing problems right now.

It's just another reminder that in your average medical office no one person fully knows what's going on. You have to known how the parts work, who to ask, what to say, to get proper care.
