Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on non-kit wearing cyclist.

Let us say that a 20 year-old passed you while riding his 80's road bike wearing only gym shorts and a t shirt.

You just described my usual riding "Kit" exactly. I'm in my 30s though. Old enough to know better but still young enough not to care.

Well clearly you need to jump on his wheel, suck it for a while, then attack half a block before your turn out. That will show him!

I more have a problem with the full team kit fan boys who think fancy attire actually means something

Not sure what you're asking.

Lots of riders wear non-kit clothing while cycling. I have kit and wear it on group and other organized rides, but frequently ride in t-shirt and jean shorts with lace up MTB shoes when I'm out for recreation, fitness or commuting. He was actually dressed very appropriately for riding a 1980s bike back when kit was the exception rather than the rule. Take a look at this picture from the BikeCentenial in 1976.

So... is this a nicely made 80's road bike? Maybe a lightweight Cro-Mo import? Is it a girls bike, could it be my size, do you think this person that can't afford a kit knows the value of the bike?

I guess I don't care much about the persons clothing.

Actually, I guess it depends on what kind of a ride I'm on. If it's a commute or a recovery ride, I wouldn't think anything of it. But if I'm in the middle of short duration intervals and a kid blows by me, I am going to be impressed no matter what kind of bike or what he's wearing.

I don't care. If he's faster than me so what? Its not a race. I wear bike shorts because my saddle requires it. As to what others wear? Not my concern.

It's not a race unless it's a race.

What is twitter? I guess my question was in the title, and I do apologize for a not so friendly post style. I am not familiar on what to do when I pass someone. Y'all in kits look so serious.

Who the hell cares what anyone is wearing.....god forbid that someone is not wearing the "appropriate attire." Live and let live.

What do you do in your car when you pass someone, especially if they look serious and are dressed differently? Why is a bicycle any different?

I suggest you continue pedalling.

Yup.
You can pass quietly, but a quick "hello", "good afternoon", "nice day, eh ?" etc... is fine too.

Passed by a 20yr old in shorts and a t-shirt? Happens all the time, with me. Has been happening for the past 30yrs and more. Never have worried about it. There are always "bigger" fish in the sea. Never had a problem with that.
