Identifying parts
The rear axle on my schwinn Traveler 3 broke. I rigged up a very temporary repair but I need a new axle as well as cones. I'm assuming I can't get cups. The wheel is original and reads "schwinn approved 36-78 made in France" on the hub.

I want this one but I'm not sure it will fit.

I'm more confident that this is the right size but it's multiple times the cost and doesn't even have cones. Where would I order the correct cones?
my attempts to contact the retailers so far have not gotten a response. Any knowledge you can share would be much appreciated.

The cups are part of the hub.
Why can't you use the existing cones/nuts?

This is a Normandy hub. In my bike shop years, I don't think I ever opened one up that did not have pitted cones.
Since there were bazillions or these made and fitted to Raleighs, Pugs, and many, many other marques, it is likely that someone else on this forum has found cones that fit a Normandy, but if we don't hear from anybody, I will be interested in your search.

OP says he has had to replace countless spokes due to breakage and continues to do so.

Got an uncalibrated tension meter a few months ago and havn't broken a right side spoke since.
Pertinent info certainly is included in the OP, unless you're really arguing that a history of broken spokes affect what type of replacement axle fits this bike.

And yes, I believe that would have greatly affected the good advise you received concerning a simple axle replacement.

Sounds like a Normandy re-brand.
If so, no new cones have been made for decades, they were rubbish to begin with, and I have yet to hear of suitable replacement.
So, either find a bike co-op and look for the same (or a Normandy) hub with a good set of cones, or take a chance on a complete axle-and-cones fitting.
