Felt Broam 30 pre delivery mod question
Hi all, been awhile
I am picking up a Felt Broam 30 that has GRX group set. The standard front chainrings are 46/30. Would it be possible to swap out those chainrings with a 50/34? Shimano website says it's compatible, but I was hoping someone here had done this. I'm thinking I'd need a longer chain.
I know the 46/30 is fine for climbing, I have that on my Cannondale CAADX, but I spinout trying to keep up in group rides on the flatter portions. My 50/34 Roubaix handles this with ease....hoping I can make his Broam REALLY be able to do anything.
Thanks

Sounds like you need to learn how to pedal, honestly. The difference between 46 and 50 in the 11 cog is 10 gear inches...basically 110" vs 120". Virtually every mass-start track race on the planet is done on 90".

For the cost of the specific chainrings you could probably buy a complete new crank with the chainrings you want.

You spin out on group rides with the 50 front and 11 rear combo? Call me impressed. Though if you are going downhill at the time, not so much. <grin>
Yes you can probably put bigger rings on it. But that depends on the crank itself. Do you know that the entire groupset including the crank is GRX? That's the big question. Shimano GRX cranks won't fit rings from their road group and I don't know how generic the GRX is with other makers. It is hollowtech II though so you could just by another crank but I don't know how well the chainline will line up. Or you can get a crank with the rings you want and also change out the BB.
You might just need to stifle your "mod" ideas until you get the bike and see what 4 less teeth on the front do for you.

In a 46-11 gear, with the Broam's 700cx40mm tires, you would be at almost 38mph at a cadence of 110rpm. If that's what you consider "spinning out," then you really need to work on your pedaling technique.
This doesn't answer your original question, but it does answer the more important question.
