Good thread. I need inspiration.
Have been trying to convert an Italian road bike with short top tube into something other than a road bike.
@Bicilover - How about some info on your beauty?

It has been a while, but fender skirts were popular in the 80's, especially on women's bikes.

I also like Sport bikes, but they are all 54s and don't fit well.

I'd like to get a Taurus 19 someday. Internal rod brakes, so cool.

Well hello friend! I am in the process of “restoring” the same bike. I am definitely taking some liberties with my bike but that is part of the fun.

Sorry about the NDS photo. There’s nothing being driven so kind of irrelevant.

Second machine…

Work in progress…

Just so you know, the frame geometry of a road bike is different than an a city bike with north road handlebars. Typically a city bike will have 71º angles or less and longer top tubes because the position of the hands on the handlebars are coming back instead of going forward. A typical road bike (and particularly a racing bicycle) make terrible candidates for converting from drop to upright bars.

Quite right.
I have yet to succeed finding a good use for this tallish stubby bike, .for a tallish unstubby rider. Maybe pass it on.

Does anyone know why Italians used the Freni Bacchetta (Rod Brakes) for so long and still do ?

Ive seen bikes from the 30's that had calliper brakes

We know the disadvantages of rod brakes. What are the advantages?

Metal rods last longer than cables and are easier to repair? Just a guess…

What are the differences between an Italian "city" bike and a "sport" bike? Derailleur? Cable brakes? Steeper head angle?
Thanks,
Brent

I've posted my 1952 Paff several times, but thought I would add a little to this thread.....here's the bike:

And here is a picture of the bike with the wife of the original owner.....her husband bought the bike new with his discharge money from the Italian Army and courted her by riding from his town to hers on a regular basis.....
