The NSC is also a Schuermann track. When we were planning the repair last year, we spent quite a while trying to get in touch with the Schuermanns, and sure enough, when we got somebody on the phone, explained what we were working on, and asked if they had drawings, the said that they did but under no circumstance could they share them.

Whatever happened to that world-class track that was supposed to be built in NYC that was proposed a couple of years ago? Didn't they have real money and real investors involved?

meh - NYC development projects. I've seen way too many of those "big idea" ventures flame out in that market to believe it until I see it built.

Even if it did make money (and bike related stuff doesn't tend to), the %% return on investment is smaller than they'd get from any number of other things in the same space.... so if it is "real money" and "real investors", I'd be shocked if they looked at ROI and kept going with it.
example - I live in a town that is THICK with fitness/bike-racer/athlete folks, we have the best funded park district in the USA, and the velodrome project here just can't get any traction. Investors won't touch it - terrible ROI, and the parks district thinks it has such a narrow appeal range that they don't think its a good proposition to put piles of money in land and fixed infrastructure. ....and this is a bike-crazy town with parks-money coming out the ears.

At this very moment, I'm working a project w/ indoor tennis courts here in town, and an indoor trampoline park - both of which will be operational by late summer- but the market appeal of both is vastly larger, insurance is cheaper, and ROI penciled out. I've run velodrome numbers (I've even done a rough budget for installing one in similar industrial/commercial spaces to what the tennis/trampoline installations are going in to) - ROI hasn't ever been close, unless fees are super high and interest is more than I think is plausible.

I love velodromes dearly, but the value proposition is a hard one to sell.

If it was someone like Andy Rihs who just wanted to play bicycles with their money, yeah - it's possible- but NYC is a tough place to do that, just given the amount it takes to play for any meaningful length of time.
I believe it was some super-rich-angle style investor that was behind it - but when putting up a velodrome, the only rational angle to take is that you are giving your money away and won't get it back. And given it'd be +5million to do it right in NYC, that and upkeep, it'll give even rich people pause.

if there's enough interest I can dig around in the public records and see where the project is, land status, and stuff like that.

Yeah, I see your point.

I was just at a local tennis club, and at 10AM on a Friday they had:

- A guy alone hitting off of a ball machine on one court.
- Lessons on 3 courts
- League singles match on 2 courts.
- League doubles matches on 5 courts.


...on a FRIDAY MORNING. This is their "slow" time of day. Things pick up after 5PM during the week and even more all day Saturday and Sunday.

And this is just one of the dozens of clubs in the metro area.

My experience today illustrates your point.

Haha, well sort of. The gold color comes from a titanium nitride coating which is supposed to lower friction. Whether or not that's true (or noticeable) and if it's something you value is up for discussion. One thing to note is that the silver comes with 112 links, and the gold only 100, so you're actually paying more for a shorter chain with a special coating.

Actually, I think a better reply would have been: "I'm not a Master. So I will just get the a silver chain." Pros get their stuff for free, whereas Masters tend to have more money than sense. For example, I have two bikes with the Izumi V and I have another new Izumi V waiting for the next bike that I build. I'm definitely not a Pro.
