As @dendawg notes, in the before-times, Staten Island was easily accessible from Manhattan by ferry. IMHO, the ferry ride itself was worth it. It's free.

More about safety: for anyone unfamiliar with Staten Island, if you visit by bicycle, be warned: storm drains adjacent to the curb are either perilous or lethal.
Yes, the numbers are higher there than the rest of the city but on a bike I never worried about Covid at all. Moving air is one of the things that prevents the virus from catching and you are almost always 6' away from anybody else. And even in pre-covid times, nobody would come within 6' of me when I've been riding, not even my wife. Ewwwww.

The ferry is running. Took it the Sunday before Labor Day as part of a club ride to Brooklyn.

When it’s warm, I will sometimes be in the park morning, noon and evening/late night. Aside from this raccoon one time, I’ve never had an issue. You’re gonna be fine.

When I was working in Manhattan with some regularity, I was always going to ride my motorcycle thru Midtown early in the AM, but never did, now a lost opportunity. If you have the chance, take it! Pictures, or it didn't happen!

I’ve been doing the club ride to Brooklyn mentioned above since the mid-90s. I remember when what is now the park was an abandoned wasteland. So nice now.

I grew up in lower Manhattan and have spent many years utilizing a lap run over the Brooklyn bridge through that whole area and then back across the Manhattan bridge to home. Has been one of my daily routes for years. It is amazing to me how much the waterfront over there has changed.
“Abandoned wasteland” pretty much says it all haha!

Perhaps we shouldn't have so glibly dismissed the OP's concerns, in light of not one but 2 events that took place in Central Park within minutes of my taking this picture yesterday morning. I think I was safer among the bears, bobcats, etc that seem to populate nightmares around here.

despite all our kidding, did you bring your bikes? was hoping you'd come back to this thread with a good story, yes?

My boss was in NYC last weekend. He said he went for a run in Central Park Saturday at 6 AM. I asked if it was safe, he said yes, and was amazed at how many people were out running/walking/biking that early.

People are back out and about but it’s nowhere near what it was like pre-lockdown.
It kinda bums me out.

No, the photo was in Harriman State Park, around 40 miles north of NYC. The morning I took the picture there were 2 brutal crimes committed in Central Park.

"They" were 2 rapes, one at 730-ish and the other less than an hour later. One of the victims was also choked to unconsciousness. IIRC 2 suspects have been arrested.

That’s commonplace here in Philly as well.
