finding old parts?

I'm trying to find a replacement cone for a Shimano 105 hub(three years old) Took the wheel to a local big box store (they are much closer than the LBS) and they say it's not possible, buy a new wheel or hub. I'm nowhere near the level to rebuild a wheel with a completely new hub. So I'm hoping someone can clarify that a replacement cone for a three year old hub is truly impossible to find or if there is a place that stocks old Shimano parts?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

There use to be a web site called Loose Screws that sold bike parts for really old stuff. They are going, or have gone, out of business.

https://www.bikeparts.com/ is a great place to buy parts that most places don't carry.

However even then something as small as a replacement cone might not be available. In that case you may have to buy the next larger assembly like an axle. Or even get an entire hub from somewhere like EBay and strip out the part you need.

But I think you might just be in lucl at Bike Parts:

Replace parts for a 3 years hub is not that hard . You need to go to a LBS and not a Big box store . Just take the cone or wheel/hub to the LBS and the should match up what you need .

Thanks everyone for your quick very helpful responses. Search engines don't do well with "I need this thingy" :-) I'm in the learning mode. Yes I definitely need to kick myself for going to the box store, but it's so close.

thanks again

Tech docs as linked above are your friend, Shimano parts get hard to source after 2-3 generations have passed since the part first came out, not years. Around 3 years is the normal life of a groupset, so your hub may still be the current version in production.

Would avoid calling a hub 105 though, as this is the name of a groupset, which has been used for the last 30 years or so, and has had several versions/generations, you need to be specific as in 5500, 5600, 5700 etc as the different hubs in these generations will have different and often incompatible components.

That's like going to the Dry Cleaner when you need food, "because it's so close". The fact that big box stores sell what appear to be bicycles, doesn't mean they know much about them.

Thanks for the heads up, it's the front hub HB-5600 generation. is that the correct terminology?

Yes-

IF you look at the Shimano tech doc, you can see the part# is Y-23W 98020

IF you Google that, you can find this-

Try your community bike co op. You might have luck finding the part there. Your profile says that you live in the DC area so I looked up a link to community bike shops in your area.
