Mid-80's Ciocc - Good Price?

Saw this one locally, guy wants to set up a trade for me building him a bike. He had this one out there on C/L for $900, mid 80's ( he doesn't know) will likely take $700. It looks nice, but I find little resource on Ciocc's to evaluate. Is it worth $700, and/or is it a collectible bike. Seems in excellent shape, a tad small at 51 or 52cm, all Shimano 600 groupset. One shift lever replaced with non-vintage model, all else original assumed. I'll see it tomorrow.

What's it worth?

It's not worth $700 in a local sale - not with 600 and that size. I think $500 in my market.

Bike is about 2x overpriced at 900. I think around 400 would be right. It would sell for more than that on the bay, but not for 900; local sales are lower.

Make an offer; at 9 he's likely getting little to no interest.

It was just listed yesterday and I've found that if you don't get interest in 24 hours, you won't get much after. I'll be making a low offer, since we're working out a trade for me supplying the parts I have on-hand, and then building a bike for him, my bike's worth maybe 300, the parts I have are all donor-bike parts, or leftover stuff I have after I've upgraded on other bikes. $100 of parts, tops. I've already given him a price of $550 for the build-out, and I'm thinking of giving him $100 cash, for his value of $650. My value is I had a bunch of stuff laying around to put together a decent bike, bought $30 worth of tires, $10 chain, $7 bartape, and a day of labor. I really get his bike for $100 if he takes it. I can stretch it to $200 cash to him, then it's a nice Ciocc for $200.

Sound fair?

Yeah, it was described as 51-52, but I'm seeing what you're seeing.

Kind of what I'm doing. I always supply the consumables, also, since they're just plain inexpensive. The components are stuff I have on-hand and have no real need for at present, Avocet triple crankset, DiaCompe 500G calipers, DiaCompe drilled levers, Shimano Altus derailleurs, Technomics stem, Sakae(?) bars, 2 Campy bits: down-tube braze-on shifters and seatpost. At most, the components are a couple hundred from my stash, but I got nearly all of them by trading up, not free, but continual spares for low-end bikes. He's pulling his wheels from the Ciocc, but I already have a nicer set.

If I give him $200 and put it together, theoretically I get the bike for $400.

Yes, it's a Campy fluted seatpost, flawless above the insertion line, and the shifters are pristine. I just need Campy clamp-on's for my Campy conversion, and the seatpost is too large. I'd have to trade out parts and shipping, time, etc, so I may as well unload them here, then go buy the right stuff. What's on my bike now is passable. (I paid 50 cents for the Technomic stem I'm giving him)

Thanks

Do you know the tubing type? A lot of later Ciocc models used Aelle.

Agree with the $400 to $500 pricing.

No, I don't know the tubing type, I did look up info on Aelle, which doesn't sound too good, but I'm an easy rider. The deal worked out with me upgrading a few of my on-hand parts on the build-out I'm doing for her (thought it was a guy with the online back and forth) and ending up with me getting her Ciocc, and $100, for the on-hand parts, and labor, to build what she wants. Fairly specific details she wanted we were able to work out. Long story short, my cost into it is $146, and 10 hours labor. A good deal for both of us.

I think the $4-500 net pricing would apply to Cioccs with at least Colombus SL tubing. Tre-tubi and Aelle frames would be more in the $3-450 price level, depending, of course on the condition of the bike.

The bike is virtually flawless, only a couple cheap nuts with rust on them. Rims need replacing because they were cheap anodized ones. Easy fix, there. It is Columbus tubing, verified that. I pick it up on Monday. I still haven't seen info (been too darn busy) on what the model is called, I've heard some people try to sell them as San Chriobels merely because they have that sticker that has the name on it, but they're WAY different bikes.

If you are getting the bike for a net price of around the $400+- amount you mentioned, I think you are still within acceptable range for what it is, especially if the bike is in great condition. Just remember to watch out for any possible hidden issues like stuck stem, seapost, bent forks or hard to see dents on the frame.....
