How do you keep the inside of your helmet clean?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So true. Guys should be proud of how their helmets, gloves, and leathers stink.

This is for motorcycle helmets but you can obviously use it for a bike helmet. It's a foam. Smells really good. I don't need it for my bike helmet because I always wear my cotton cap underneath.

A dunk in a tub of very mild detergent every 7 years does wonders for keeping it fresh.

Helmets are generally considered expired (foam breaks down) after about 5 years or so.

I didn't realise people actually washed their helmets. Every day's a school day!

Never washed a helmet per se, though I'm intrigued by the easy idea of top-rack of dishwasher.
Straps otoh, can get white and crusty from sweat salts.

Sounds like a great way to destroy the foam and render the helmet useless.

Basically a dishwasher is detergent and lots of squirted water. What's going to destroy what?

Mine don't either. No nostrils, no smell sensors.

I just wash the helmet in the kitchen sink with a little dish soap.

some people in here wash their helmets while they are in the shower after their rides.
I fill my bathroom sink with hot water, add a little laundry soap, push the helmet down to get it good and wet, flip it over so the straps are completely immersed and leave it for a while. Come back, rinse it out. squeeze out the last of the soapy water in the pads and straps, rinse again, repeat and hang to dry, Pretty simple. I've been doing this for decades. Doesn't seem to faze them at all.

And yes, I know these are ancient posts. But some issues simply don't go away.

The heat and harsh detergents.

See here:-
https://helmets.org/dishwasher.htm

But hey, it's your helmet. Go for it if you think it's a good idea

Good article. Food for thought.
Lots of settings on dishwashers though. I can completely turn off the extra heat (water heating and dryer). That article seemed to indicate that no helmet lost any protective abillity, but they seemed upset that the labels inside the helmets fell off.

Yes, mostly cosmetic damage, but the test samples looked terrible afterward. Glue coming apart around the shells, discolouring, fading etc. You could use a very low rinse setting without any detergent, but then you might as well just give it a quick rinse in the sink.
I certainly wouldn't use dishwasher detergent. It is pretty harsh, even on dishes/glasses!

Easily removeable straps would be a great feature on a helmet.

I wash what can be removed every once in a while and I use a disinfectant spray if the stink is really bad. Dit it once in 5 years.

I spray my helmet with the garden hose a few times over the summer. Sounds like this is akin to chain lube, you can make it as complicated and time consuming as you like.

I have two helmets I rotate. I just rinse my helmet out after each ride and hang them to dry overnight. I used to let them get all cruddy and smelly, but got tired of it after a while. One of those things that, after I started doing it, I couldn't believe I didn't think of it earlier. No smell, the pads don't rot out, and the straps don't crust over with sweat.
