Modern Steel Road Frames < $1k?
Can you help me find one?
-horizontal top tube
-rim brakes (regular mount)
-preferably larger diameter tubing
-carbon fork
-NOT endrance geometry
-large tire clearance doesn't matter (I'm fine on 25s)
-preferably the further away from $1k the better
I was leaning towards the Cinelli Vigorelli road in purple, but they seem to be sold out now? Any frameset recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Dang - what a tease. I was looking forward to seeing some cool, modern steel frame suggestions and then you went and listed a bunch of distinctly non-modern attributes.

This one? Ive liked the look every time ive seen pictures of it built up, but its at least a couple years old...they are still making it? And for that claimed weight in Thron, they have to be measuring a small frame, right?
That list is tough to fully match.
You can get all but disc.
You can get all but carbon fork.
You can get all but under $1k.
Personally, I would ebay a high quality frame, buy an aftermarket 1 1/8 carbon fork, and have the frame powdercoated whatever color I want. It will get you everything you want.

I'm a little stuck on the
Does that mean a time trial bike?
Otherwise, if it's not a TT or Endurance geometry, then IMO you are looking for a cruiser style bike like this https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/b...colorCode=grey
But this is aluminum. However the geometry is great for someone that wants to do a leisurely ride and not be in the standard position an endurance bike or the even more aggressive TT bike will give you.

Horizontal top tube - compact or semi-compact is far more common.
Rim brakes, and not even direct mount, at that.
Tire clearance - even a lot of aero bikes are aiming to clear 28mm tires or larger, these days.
I wouldn't say that endurance geometry is modern but, with spike in popularity of gravel and all-road bikes, we are seeing a lot of more relaxed (higher stack, shorter reach) options out there, more so than even 7 or 8 years ago.

Maybe there is an unsold one somewhere?
You could get a Gunnar but it's out of your budget. I have one and it's been great.

the exact frame you're seeking is going to be found mostly in three places:
used. there are some bikes like that with somewhat modern features. Soma, Surly, Salsa, Gunner?
small domestic fabricators or custom with a $$$ price tag
very few new options. Soma has some NOS Smoothies but only in 66cm. Rivendell is neo-retro, so what's wrong with quill stems and lugs?
disc brakes are almost universal now. just because Froome doesn't like them doesn't mean they're not perfect for 99.99% of everyone else who is not a professional racer.

Rack/fender mounts may not be needed, but they really dont harm anything either. They weigh nothing and dont inhibit functionality.
But I guess those tiny little holes could be seen as ugly and unacceptable...

Time trial bikes generally have the most vertical seat tube. Endurance bikes will be a little less and cruisers will generally have the most acute angle between the horizontal and seat tube.
The more vertical the seat tube, the more further back the bb will be in relation to your butt. This is good for power output if you want a very very aero position like you will be in on a TT bike.
Endurance bikes assume that you want to do some sort of long distance riding at a good effort and have the seat tube angle a little less vertical which moves the bb a little more forward in relation to your butt is supposed to be. But usually they still demand a somewhat aero ride position and that is varied by the stack measure. And this will determine how aggressive the geometry is considered. Many seem to use Endurance as a term for how aggressive their fit is but to me it's wrong. A fit is either aggressive or less aggressive with respect to how aero you want to be.
Sometimes people refer to a road bike as a race bike or endurance bike, race meaning aggressive fit with low stack and endurance being high stack and less aggressive. But to me both are endurance bikes. They are both made to ride long distances.
The bikes with the least vertical seat tube that also get ridden on the road are cruisers. They put the bb far out in front of you and this lets a person sit very upright on a big comfortable saddle. But the position doesn't work well for long rides of hours and many miles. Because all your weight is on your butt and you waste energy from all the drag you create being upright. For short rides at leisurely speed they will be very comfortable. I'd have one if I wanted to ride slow and upright.

What size Vigorelli are you looking for? My next build is going to be a steel frameset and I had the Vigorelli purple heart in my sights but going to hold off for a bit for a De Rosa Corum. If you're looking for a M or L, bikelanechicago.com still has them in stock.

not sure if this matches the geo you're looking for: https://www.milwaukeebicycleco.com/m...keroad-20834/p add a carbon fork to that and it's a little over $1k.
look around fo a used Fairdale Goodship.

sloping top tube.
im not knocking the suggestion- its a great one really, for anyone willing to compromise on a relatively meaningless want. a level top tube on a modern frameset with rim brakes and carbon fork for under $1k is just so specific, im half enjoying seeing the search.
