Basso Gap frameset? My first Italian . . .
Hi fellow forum members, I am looking at a Basso Gap frameset, appears to be 90s. This is part of my search to move from perfectly adequate Fuji and other 70s and 80s machines to something deserving of Campag components and more interesting wheels. BUT - the seller advises that the headset bearings are not complete. Am I likely to be able to find replacements? The frameset was sold by Brick Lane Bikes in London, UK, but they don't sell it any more. Any thoughts would be most welcome. BTW he's asking $400.

Is it 1" threadless or 1 1/8" headset? The 1" headset is not as common place. Either way you should be able to find a replacement somewhere.

More on the Basso Gap . . . .
Hi Mr. 66 and Ex Pres, thanks so much for replying. The steerer tube is 1". Here are a couple of close-ups of the headset bearings that are actually present. By the way, is $400 a bit steep?

$400 seems fair to me for good condition frame like that. I haven’t seen a welded Gap like that before. My ‘84 Gap is a wonderful bike.

Hi Tuber Roast, thanks so much for the photo. I bought the frame and am, frankly, excited about my first Italian bike after nothing but competent and perfectly adequate Japanese machines.
My aim is to build it up to close to the groupset and wheelset that would most likely have been fitted. Might you kindly let me know the FD, RD, rims and hubs you have?

Kitting out my first Italian . . .
It's steel, weighing in at 6.2 pounds or 2.8 kg. I have the "Birth Certificate" coming from Basso which will date the frame accurately - and probably not much else, after spending €20 with them, although the frame details would be nice.

Interesting. I think Basso was using Columbus and Deda and their own "superlight" tubing. Never saw a Gap like this one. The bottom bracket looks to be investment cast with lugs, but all the other joints are either fillet brazed or TIG. Looks to be about a 56cm and in pretty good shape. Steerer looks to be cut pretty short. Hope it fits.

Hi G Kamienski, it's a 54, nicely in my range 54-56. I checked the top of the steerer tube, no signs of someone having attacked it with a hacksaw and the stem fits nicely. So . . . . whaddya think I should equip this lovely frame with? Oh Campagnoloooo!

My Gap is Columbus and Dedacciai from what I have read. I currently have a Boyd Vitesse wheelset on it, Ultegra groupset. I love it.
