Ok, it may only be good for up to 3x9, but Shimano FC-2303 is 'older'.
I've used it on mountain bike and tourer, and it's easy to fit other chainrings onto it.

The outer rings on that crank is 130mm bcd. The smallest chainring that can fit on that is a 38t. That is a no go for me. I want to be able to go down to 44/32/22.

How about Tiagra. May be find a 170. I have a 175 for a planned build.

Er, but it's already fitted with a 30T as standard?

And anyway, I've been using a 52/42 one with a 22T chainring fitted for many years (and once had a 20T chainring on it - for a tour involving 4 mountain passes).

NB you can only use the larger 4-5 cassette sprockets when using a 52/42/22T front chain ring, because the chain gets hooked on the 42T ring otherwise. Even so, you don't lose any ratios due to this. If you have a 44/32/22 set up then no doubt this problem diminishes considerably.

Maybe you should look at the backside photo on the link I gave to see what you're dealing with.

Currently using a 3X10 old Deore Xt, Perhaps you could find one of the older ones using this.

I pilfer the cranks off old mountain bikes, but I have square taper. I chose square taper and this is part of the reason (and the **** quality of the shimano BB on my modern mountain bike, and the compatibility issues that serve only the manufactures). Even with hipsters buying up old steel mtbs you can still find bikes with old deore and they are nice.
