Ive been working on this design for a few months and just finished it, and milled in Titanium for testing.
So far so good and very convenient and sturdy!

Is there any need for this?
- Quick release for Speedplay pedals

I am a pilot and fly my folding bike with me in a small general aviation plane.

On some of my trips to the mountains, I enjoy clipping in using speedplay pedals and monitoring the wattage through a Stages custom Ultegra arm.
I wanted a quick release speedplay pedal, so it would store against the frame like the MKS brand does, and fit neatly into the baggage compartment of the aircraft.
Swap between bikes and quick, with no tools needed.

I spent some time designing this part and testing it in aluminum before finishing last week and cutting from Titanium. The result is very satisfying.

Not sure if a speedplay quick release has been done before, so Ill post here and see if anyone is interested in these titanium axles too.
I can make it for SPD-SL also, but only need the speedplay on my bikes here

Same Q factor as stock.. 53mm.

But, an added benefit is... I can make any axle length now. 59mm seems popular for gravel/MTB.
Any size really now

Also if people are using the SPD-SL style, which pedal has the most "axle" stick out? A lot of them are flush to the crank and no room to add this custom part.
I found the R8000 pedal has enough to work with, but not sure if this is popular with the SL guys.

That is pretty cool and I can see where that could come in real handy on the folding bike. Also, with it not screwing with the Q factor, that is that is a bonus. I could see having some wider axles where some people use pedal extenders to help with knee issues or certain types of bikes like bents. When I was getting back into the sport, and I weighed a lot more, I had some extenders to help get a better pedal motion as I worked off my gut.

Thats great to hear. Yes, instead of pedal extenders just one longer piece which is light also.. titanium and cut to the correct size. Added bonus feature - quick release.

This would be dope for my Ritchey Breakaway. One less took that I need to bring. Currently use garmin rally pedals though, would need to get a different power meter and these pedals.

Two unrelated thoughts:
1. How much weight can these quick release ("QR") pedal spindles withstand?
2. Ultegra R8000 pedals are now available with +4 mm spindles, but I bet there is a still a market for custom spindle lengths (with or without QR feature).

That’s pretty cool. Nice work! Can you kick them into position when getting ready to ride or do you have to kneel down and use your hands? I’m thinking about my triathlons and the gobs of bikes in the corral having a slightly slimmer profile at the pedal level might be helpful.

People always know where their handlebars are, obviously, but I’ve snagged/tangled my pedals against other bikes/bags/etc when transitioning in from the swim to start the bike segment and when coming back to start the run. We’re not talking about oodles of time (especially for me since I do it for the social aspects - not trying to be an age group winner or qualify for St. George or Kona/Nice!) but it would be one less thing to think about.

1. How much weight of the rider can the quick release axle/adapter withstand,,, Good idea to test this.
2. How do people know their custom length? I was told 53mm was the standard and 59mm for MTB to be a little wider out. But wahoo makes the speedplay custom if you call them in 53, 55, 59, 65 they told me. How do people know which one is right for them?

These are being stored on the frame, to make the bike slim, and then you use your hands to release it and move the pedal to the crank arm. Then install with the QR adapter

Just did another revision to make it fit tighter. If 53mm is the standard default length for pedal Q factor... how do people know if they are a 55mm or 59mm or etc?

53 mm was the standard spindle length for Speedplay stainless, but the chromoly version came with a 55 mm spindle by default, which was the widest non-custom version. This article explains that wider BBs on contemporary bikes reduce heel clearance, which can be regained by using longer pedal spindles.

A few years ago, I had tried regular Shimano 105 SPD-SL pedals and could not get enough toe out. With the recent release of the + 4 mm Ultegra version, I have finally started to ride clipless. I guess I have big hips.

No, the 55 mm was specified for just one specific Speedplay (pre-acquisition by Wahoo) pedal, i.e., the chromoly version of the Ultra Light Action pedals.

The standard distance from pedal center to crank arm surface is 53 mm for Speedplay and 52 mm for Shimano. The articles I linked to suggest that more people than previously thought would benefit from longer pedal spindles/axles and the resulting wider stance width. This makes sense given that many road cycling specifications were developed for pro cyclists, most of whom have slimmer but much more muscular builds than regular cyclists, for whom the next longer version of 56 mm may serve as a better standard.

Hey guys, just to revisit this and show the latest version... I was working hard to make sure its considered a direct replacement from stock.

And the Q factor is preserved.



To do this, the Wahoo pedal must have the washer installed with it (comes in the original package). And my axle goes on without washer, then the Q is the same.

Is that close enough now to consider it the same length?

That's pretty cool. I use the 65mm spindles in steel. Another nice use is that if you store the bike inside the vehicle for long drives, the lower-profile can be much easier to load/unload. My pedals alway get caught on the rubber mat too.

I have a TERN VERGE X11 and I use Speedplay Zero pedals (pre-wahoo). This looks promising to me.

I used two existing interfaces. MKS as cited above and Wahoo/Speedplay on the clear side. I merged them together with a titanium axle that has features from both existing platforms

So many responses were received for the free demo kits and definitely dont have available so many free systems! But our first kits were randomly chosen and testing now. Each rider is testing for about 3 weeks to use it for free and then ship it out to the next user.
