Best Cycling Magazine
Does anyone find value in any cycling magazines? Looking for a gift idea. A few options I found are cycling weekly, cycling plus and Bicycling. Am I missing anything? Any pros/cons? Thanks!

I don't have a subscription, but I've been impressed with the articles and photography that I've seen from Peloton Magazine (not related to the exercise bikes). Seems like there's more of road cycling culture-type stuff, as opposed to just equipment news and reviews. It seems like it'd be the kind of cycling mag that you wouldn't mind sitting on the coffee table if people came over, if that makes any sense.

Count one vote for "Road Bike Action".
A bit raw in presentation, which I see as a plus...last few years they have supported the gravel trend, but the staff strike me as genuine roadie enthusiasts.
Not impressed by "Bicycling"...perhaps it's more suitable for people very new to cycling.
Not for anyone with road cycling enthusiasm beyond a beginning level, imo.

I vote for Cycling Plus. It's expensive, from UK, but the photos alone are worth it. Always inspiring. Lots of good training and health info. Plus the tests seems to be very honest.

Cyclist magazine
I like Cyclist magazine; most magazines are comprised of overt advertisements and covert ones, with little bona fide content (articles that are driven by content more than by selling bike stuff). Cyclist magazine seems to be slightly less dependant on ad revenue and, because it’s a bigger magazine than the others, it has more articles on a bigger range of topics. It does cost more though.

Have you thought about buying them a premium membership to the worlds most elite cycling website? What could be better than the gift of the 41?

I will jump in and support most of the posts here. Peloton is excellent and more about culture than just the review of the latest new thing. Cyclist is also very good but each issue is a bit method and predictable, which some people may like. Bicycling has sucked for the past 50 years (ha). Rouleur is stupid expensive.

Road Bike Action is decent. Lots of product reviews, short articles and ads for all types of products, but that’s what I wanted. It makes for enjoyable light reading. Unfortunately, the magazine industry, in all sectors not just cycling, just like newspapers is on a slow but certain path toward extinction.

I agree that Cycist can be a bit formulaic, but the articles themselves are typically very well-written. It has a really nice balance between aspirational/travel features, fitness stuff, focussed procycling coverage, and 'shiny things' reviews.

As I tell my wife to this day, I've always read Hustler and Playboy for the cycling articles. They're awsome.

+1 on Peloton. Year in pictures issue (or whatever they call it) is awesome. Their TDF Guide edition is a great handy reference guide when watching, etc.

What is this "magazine" concept of which you speak?

Far Ride Magazine is amazing. Big photo spreads and stories. Really different from grocery store magazines of the '90s. But all of their prints I think are sold out now. I hope they do another release soon but Covid put a damper on their travels. It's a great example of how print doesn't necessarily have to be dead.

Bicycle Quarterly. Intelligently written articles that span pages, not just a sentence or two as some publications are prone to do. They are focused on their design philosophy, but not offensive. By far the best mag I have been gifted over the years. In fact I ask the person that originally gifted it to me several years ago, to only give that gift to me, and he has held true to it. I donate them to my LBS after I have thoroughly read through them so that they can enjoy them as well.

Also folks, take a look at Bone Shaker Magazine out of the UK. It too is a very cool publication and it is not focused on the newest and latest 9000 - 12000 dollar/euro carbon race bike with electronic shifting
