Shift Lever Boss Types

Most of the time I am fitting Campy friction shift levers to old frames on a campy boss but on my UNIVEGA I had to use Shimano 600 levers...

Can someone summarize the different types of downtube shift lever bosses for me - I thought it would be simple to just look this information up but I must not be looking in the right places...

I believe the Campagnolo design is pretty much the standard, though the threads for the friction screws may vary.

Shimano used a proprietary boss from approx. '83-'86. They have caused a good deal of head scratching for folks, myself included, when you run into them for the first time.

No, that's the standard one. The proprietary one has another raised box section pointing "forward".

It basically looks like middle part of part 6 added to part 7 .

Still looking for another picture.

here is the 'shimano boss' in action. while looking for shifters for this frame/boss I discovered that (despite what the text used to say the Loose Screw onse do not have the 4.5mm screw. I also learned through that fiasco and here, that the real purpose of that plastic doodad is to turn a 'campi boss' into a 'shimano boss'

here is a shimano boss in action

There's also the matter of the internal thread. I think the early Cyclo/Simplex/Huret bosses had a different thread than Campy bosses, though the rest of the shifter will fit.

My ~1970 Peugeot won't fit any standard threads. The only screw that will seem to go into it is the original one, which won't work with modern shifters as far as I've found. It sucks, and has really put a damper on doing anything with the frame.

Most are 5M; others are 4.5M.

Tap the bosses to 5M or have it done. It literally takes 5 minutes for someone with a tap.

My bike has the Shimano Dura Ace shifter bosses from 1985.

I fitted my Campy shifters to them. The Campy boss has a square base that the shifter stop fits around. The base of the shimano boss is round and the stop is built onto the round stud. Picture a small projection at the inside shoulder of the shaft the shifter fits on. To get the Campy shifters to work, I had to drill a hole and install a pin in each shifter to hit that stop. The diameters and threads were the same as Campy.

My frame was built for me in '81 and have the 4.5 mm bolt and different stop than the Campagnolo.
