Obviously for long mtb rides you need a down country bike. Duh! 
I’m not saying that suspension is bad. I’m just saying that as the suspension has been developed, people haven’t used them to increase mileage. In fact race events have significantly decreased the mileage for events. In the early days of racing with rigid bikes (and sometimes no saddle), race events were often point to point events of 50+ miles. Now they are short track events of about 20 miles…and everyone of the racers is riding a dually.
And one of the losses due to the suspension is using the bike for any kind of utility. Very few mountain bikes have rack mounts these days.

Hey -- I resemble that remark.
Note the SunTour RollerCam front brake, which makes me think my fork is a very early production version. (Can't tell from the June 1988 frame build date, because the frame was a warranty replacement for the original owner.
Mine gets a lot us use -- it's an absolute pleasure to ride, extremely versatile, fast for a mountain bike.

Does anyone know of a good article, video or book that covers the history of the mountain bike, covering its origins, design and engineering thoughts and then up to the boom in the 90's when its popularity was at the highest. I was part of that movement that had a road bike I bought in the 80's but pretty much stopped riding it when I bought my 1992 Trek Antelope, fitted out with fenders, back rack and panniers to commute to work. At the time, I thought it was a great bike for my downtown commutes but in hindsight it was a giant steel tank! ha ha

Picked this Schwinn Probe up today. $50 as shown.
Seller said was recently tuned up.
Rear cogs look clean and shows some new cable housing to FD.
Rides, shifts, brakes, flawless.
2 questions: 1- Rear rack. 2- Fenders. Would like to make this a touring / grocery rig.
Dug out a couple rear racks, to see what would fit, but I'm not seeing where they would attach.
I see the lower eyelets, but where would it attach up top?
Tried an old Blackburn and Axiom and both seem to not have upper attachment points to bolt to the bike.
Is there an older style rear rack that would work better?
I''m clueless about fenders.
Any suggestions for a good set that would go with this bike?

You could attach the top of a rear pannier rack with P-shaped clamps around the seat stays (make sure to get the rubber-coated kind), or a single steel strap bent in an L and bolted to the bridge between the seat stays, straddled by the rear cantilever straddle cable.

looked up tubus and am wondering if they have rubber cushion? The video I watched seemed to show the metal straps wrapped directly to the metal seat stays.
Grabbed a couple small p-style clamps at local Hardware store down the street. Heres what I’ve got so far. Seat bag and old Axiom rack both raided from my parts bin.
Did I use the correct lower eyelet?
Looked up some Planet Bike Freddy’s and seems like they’ll attach to brake bridge bolt hole? Will call around to my lbs(s) and see if theres any in the used bin before I buy new.

The Tubus mount is basically a "P-clamp on steroids" having the advantage of using separate bolts/nuts for securing the mount to the seat stay vs. securing the rack to the mount. But you are correct, a concern is with the fact that it's not rubberized. A couple of properly-placed cut pieces of bike innertube would fix that.
Looking again at the bike from that angle, my original idea about a single stay going to the seat-stay bridge would likely not work, based on where the brake straddle cable connects.

The Tubus I’ve used had pieces of friction tape shipped along with the adapters. The adapters do mount more positively than ordinary P-clamps so that it doesn’t slide like the P-clamp can.

I just posted this photo in the history of Ross bikes thread, but it also belongs here. My riding buddy and I picked up near twin Ross Mt Hood over the last couple of weeks. Mine (I'm wearing the Cino jersey) is a 1986 with Tange MTB triple-butted tubes and mostly Suntour XC components (including roller cam brakes). His is a 1985 with mostly Shimano components and a Tange high tensile forks sticker (no frame sticker).
Just this last weekend we took these bikes to Fairfax CA and rode some of the classic trails that the originators of mountain biking made famous. We also were given a personal tour of the mountain biking museum there by Joe Breeze and Charlie Kelly (two of the founding fathers of mountain biking).

another Giant ATX - ATX 760
butted cromo TIG welded frame with STX RC components
I believe it is a 1995 ; black cherry color
this ATX 760 was a new / unsold bike that became a donor bike at a LBS - wheels, crank, derailleurs all removed
it moved from the LBS basement to my basement where it sat untouched for 20+ years
been accumulating parts during the last few years - including the STX RC parts that were originally spec'd on the bike - hope to have it completed during this winter

Came across an early Fisher Montare today. 1986 as far as I can tell. I thought someone had changed a few things around by the mixed up group of parts, but the catalog shows it to be all original. First thing that threw up a flag was the Light Action RD. I thought these had the Deerhead group, but for this one it is only the FD that is a Deerhead. Going to be a fun rebuild.

I restomoded a Specialized Rockhopper. Changed the Maxxis for Panaracer Smoke/Dart, but other than that it looks identical to the pic below.

I had this built by the Montlake Bike Shop in 1994. I was looking for an AMP Research B2/B3 frameset, but couldn't find any shop that could get one. Fortunately these guys were able to get this frame in(Mongoose Amplifier,- a rebranded AMP B3). I planned on having them build it with XT or XTR, but the shop owner talked me into XC Pro.
This is pretty much how it looked in 1994, with the exception of tires and other consumables.

I picked up this 89 Cannondale Shred Red from list member Drew a couple weeks ago and today took it on a nice ride. Hit up the local trails and put on some road miles as well and it felt great. Love the shifting…Deore thumbies with a triple…very intuitive and easy. It’s got fenders…needed today in the slushy mud…and it could be a great every day do it all bike. It’s my first Cannondale so I’ve finally found a proper home for the old saddle bag that I’ve had for years. Fun bike.

I had this built by the Montlake Bike Shop in 1994. I was looking for an AMP Research B2/B3 frameset, but couldn't find any shop that could get one. Fortunately these guys were able to get this frame in(Mongoose Amplifier,- a rebranded AMP B3). I planned on having them build it with XT or XTR, but the shop owner talked me into XC Pro.
This is pretty much how it looked in 1994, with the exception of tires and other consumables.

Picked this up from a BF member over the summer. Turning it into my all road touring bike.
Panasonic Mountain Cat 3500 1989
So far- seat swap; fenders added; Al seatpost; blue cages & pedals; VO Milan bars; swapped shifters to Suntour power ratchet; extravagant White Industries hubbed wheelset from the 90s- apparently unused!
In the spring I’ll framesaver and go with new cables and housing. New chain too, this one’s not working with the 8spd very well. Probably’cause the cassette is the only Shimano bit.
