Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My garmin 530 has started to freeze more and more. Today it happened atleast 5 times. Twice is just restarted on its own, kind of nerve wracking since it’s only a year old. Anyone else have similar issues?

Nope.

Has it always done this? If not, when did it start? Does it freeze in certain situations/locations? I would often get an incident warning at the same intersection...

It did it once like a month ago, and it has started to happen atleast once every other ride. Different locations different conditions. The worst part is, I don’t notice it right away unless it’s something obvious . Like reporting a speed when I’m stopped, or showing cadence and I am not pedaling.

They said something about the retina. I didn't get it all because my Spanish isn't perfect. I asked lots of questions though. He said I might not need a corrective lens on that side, if successful. Now, we may be talking about two different things. Just because they call it macular degeneration doesn't mean it's the same thing you have. He said that without the surgery, the vision in that eye would get progressively worse. I don't seem to have any peripheral vision issues; it just doesn't focus well at distance.

The pedals came with red cleats, but I had yellow cleats already on the shoes, maybe that’s the issue? I doubt it.

I don’t have macular degeneration so I have no understanding of your problem. I have swelling from blockages. Whatever you do, don’t take medical advice from me. I haven’t even slept in a Holiday Inn in 15 years, let alone playing a doctor on TV or here.

Huh. Dunno. If there's a way to do a reset, I'd try that first. If it's still a problem, I'd contact Garmin and/or the shop where you bought it and see about a replacement.

Well there ya go! I thought that's what you had. My dad had it; don't know whether or not it's hereditary. He was deep into his eighties before it got bad. His thing was a part of his visual field blurred progressively, I believe. Maybe someone who has stayed in a Holiday Inn can clarify.

I had a vitrectomy and laser zapping of bleeding vessels in 2011 in my good eye. Luckily, the bleeding and zapping was near the outer edge of the retina so it doesn’t affect my vision though I can find a blind spot in my peripheral vision if I look for it.
So-called “wet” macular degeneration involves proliferation of capillaries or arterioles or something, which leak and mess things up.

I’m on my third 530, all have been warranties. This one is now messing up elevation sometimes. Call Garmin, they replace essentially everything no questions asked.

I am a bit groggy this morning as I did not sleep well. We had a mouse in our room, and although Jackie loves to chase mice and play with them, it takes her forever to actually kill them. I was too tired to get up and find the mouse, but the racket from the chase kept me up about 2 hours past my bedtime. Of course when I got up, the poor little mousie was dead.

Speaking of mousie, I wonder when Velo Vol will come out of hibernation….

I have really ambivalent feelings about house mouses. They are intelligent, and resourceful, athletic, and cute, but ultimately destructive and filthy. I kill them with regret.

Miss VV too.

I would start with a conversation with Garmin about it. Check for updates? Then a factory reset. See how it goes from there. Been there done that with my original wahoo. Ended up with a crash replacement Roam after struggling for a year.

I can walk into a room and make the internet go haywire. My wife has charging cable issues. Your wife has Garmin issues. Like bodies, we all have one.
