Outside Magazine Dirtbags?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, they do owe him an apology.

First thing they teach you in photojournalism class: It's unethical to fark around with the photos.

Who is behind Outside Magazine, anyway? I started receiving it a few months back for no apparent reason. Never paid for a subscription and, to be honest, never would. (It's not that great.) So, does every cyclist in America receive a comp copy every month?

Never thought of this before. Good point. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Even if you've got quite few hands feeding you.

Lance and Outside mag had a beautiful relationship.... one of them cheated on the other one. Can you blame him for being mad... or are you old divorced dudes going to defend the Dirtbags decision?

It's an old publishing trick: Buy somebody else's mailing list (PBK, Jenson, etc.) and send everybody on the list a free subscription, then claim the increased circulation and jack up your advertising rates. Dirtbag kind of behavior.

I don't have an opinion about LA one way or the other, but what they did there was just wrong.

Aye. This has just happened to myself and my wife, at the same time. F-ing Rolling Stone magazine, which I loathe. We now get two copies of every issue. Hooray.

No matter how many covers he has been on for Outside mag before, their behavior is still unacceptable. I would even argue that because he's been on so many, they should be even less likely to pull a stunt like that.

Put your personal feelings about LA aside, it's a dirtbag move by Outside any way you slice it.

Serious question here, how is this any different that every women's magazine that Photoshops out wrinkles, freckles, slims down waistlines, etc... then uses that to convince girls / women that women should look like that? I do side with LA on this, but I also think it's nothing new and is even more disturbing when it is done to alter someone's perception of what normal looks like. Every thing else in this world has a disclaimer, why shouldn't magazines have to disclose what they did to augment a picture in a magazine?

Advertisers care about PAID circulation, which is a different number that gets looked at.

I remember reading a magazine article -- I think it was in "Outside" -- about minimalist camping entitled, "The Dirtbag Manifesto".

Strange coincidence.

You're an moran. Pie is immeasurably better. Plus Pie Monthly doesn't photoshop their pies like those jerks at Modern Birthday Cake.
