There are many books on the subject (training for racing) - I suggest you pick one up.
I would think that even the "Time Crunched" books will admit that their training model has tradeoffs compared to the "classic" training models.
I dunno, I just do what my coach tells me to do!

Got a few - Arnie Baker's, the Carmichael one and heart rate and power books. I do not recall anything but miles and sleep for those 4+ hour rides. Which - is why I was asking.
Most things seem to focus on power, getting stronger and faster, not so much lasting. I'm unlikely to buy another book.

I was really asking. I have not heard of anything other than just riding long to learn to ride long. And riding long at Z1,Z2. If intervals are a shortcut - or anything else I'm very interested in learning about that. This is new territory (I road very long - but not racing).

And then there is cat 3, where the longest race we do all season is flat 90 miles requiring nothing but pre-loading/hydrating, and drinking 600 kcal on the ride. In my experience long training rides require a lot more nutrition - partly because they are longer/slower and partly because I don't necessarily load up and cut alcohol for every long training ride.

Just a 30 minute crit. But actually I looked at some percentages from 1 hour crits and they are similar, so I guess it's not that interesting.

Up today, heading into two important race weekends.
3hrs (FTP=250).
Warm up 15min@160-180w.
1x3min@240-260w
Easy 5min
2 sets of 4x3min @270-290w sprint at 100% the last 10-15sec. Turn around and recover on way down, 5min recovery.
First set on a hill, second set on the flat
On the way home do some solid tempo@190-220w

properly ruined myself this weekend before a rest week.
saturday: the usual 4.5 hour deathmarch with 6*5' hill repeats at the beginning and 8*30" bursts throughout the rest with the balance at z2
sunday: 4 hours z2 with a 3*20' set thrown into the middle.
hopefully starting racing next weekend! i'm feeling really really happy with the work i put in this winter, hoping it nets something during race season.

My point was simply that intervals, while not a perfect substitute, often offer adaptations that are useful for those longer rides/races without requiring the amount of time/volume of longer training rides. Point was that you can get the same/similar training effect by hitting the intervals hard and doing long rides when permissible.
