1974 Fuji Finest Tubing? Double butted or plain gauge seat tube?
I recently acquired a 1974 Fuji Finest. I think this was supposed to be a pretty high end bike. But the seatpost is only 26.6mm instead of the 27.2mm or so you see with single butted seat tubes.
I figure this frame either has a double butted or plain gauge seat tube. Anyone know which?

I really like vintage fuji bikes. You should post some pics. I had a buddy that rode a fuji finest and it was a great bike. It was 3d from the top of the line at the time.

Are the decals gone? I have a '72, and am pretty sure the decal specifies butted chrome molybdenum tubing.

It may depend on frame size. In late 1973, plagued with the dreaded oscillation problem, Kawamura switched to a straight gauge seat tube on its 25" Nishiki Competitions. The frame tubing pedigree decal on rhm's Fuji looks identical to the one Nishiki used, for Ishiwata double-butted CrMo.

Typically, seat tubes on frames labeled 'double-butted' are either straight gauge or single-butted. On the single-butted seat tubes, the butted end is at the bottom bracket shell while the non-butted end is at the seat cluster. Although there are double-butted seat tubes, they aren't used very often.
