Tick-tock
I've suddenly got a loud tick-tock from my rear wheel - only when I'm sitting on it ped - happens whether I'm pedalling or not.
It doesn't happen when I get off and spin the wheel.
Any ideas (it's embarrassing - like the crocodile in Peter Pan).

Have you, or the LBS, checked spoke tension? Sounds like it could be a spoke which is just loose enough that the nipple could be hitting against the rim, but only when the rim is under pressure.

Comrade, in the process of checking the spokes, I've noticed an ominous split in the rim itself - looks like I need a new wheel?

The wheels are marked as Giant S-R2. I've spotted a new pair on eBay - never having bought a wheel before, please tell me how I'd know if they'd be compatible with my cassette. What about diameter?

The wheels you linked to on ebay will work. However, given how worn out your rims are, if the cassette and chain are original to your bike, you might think about replacing those as well.

why buy the same type f wheel? Obviously you by now know they are not good wheels....

Depends on how many miles op had on them. (I suspect you are correct, however). I dunno anything about the rims but the tiagra hubs on the wheels for sale on evay are good quality for the price.

I've had the wheels for 5.5 years and travelled approx 3,000 per year on them. As a non car-owner, nature-lover and amateur landscape photographer, I'm staggered that they lasted this long given the multitude of treacherous surfaces they've been subject to.
