Help. What brand bicycle is this???
Hi,
I had a guy contact me on Youtube commenting on one of my videos. He wanted me to help figure out what brand frameset he has. Honestly I have no idea. Not enough clues for me. Maybe you guys can recognize this. I asked him for a serial number. The owner thinks it's a Mercian.

Looks like a Motobecane from the 1970's. Check out the pictures in this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage-bicycles-whats-worth-appraisals/1206650-1974-5-motobecane-grand-jubilee.html, but realize that they used the same/similar color scheme on a number of different models.

Looks like a Motobecane from the 1970's. Check out the pictures in this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...d-jubilee.html, but realize that they used the same/similar color scheme on a number of different models.

Color scheme matches a 1976 Motobecane Grand Jubilee. If so it should be Reynolds 531 main tubes. Definitely Motobecane lug work.

I concur. Moto was my first thought as well. The oddball jumble of headset parts and the curve of the fork tell me we're most likely looking at something French. The paintjob is très "moto". The shape of the witness mark where the head badge used to be is a pretty close match for this shape:

I am not sure about the Grand Jubilee thing. Perhaps a Grand Record. I base that comment on the one and wonderful Motobecane Grand Record that I had a long time ago. The seat stay tops, to me, cause me to think this.

Yeah, but the GJ had those seat stay caps as well, and the GR did not come in this color scheme. If that's a Huret dropout, I think that would be the clincher.

Definitely a Moto, and with that (missing) headbadge it's a safe bet to be at latest a 1973, but as for model: what are the dropouts? What seat post size? And for the fork: the chrome bulge-formed crown could be OEM for this frame but does not ring "true" for either the Grand Jubile(e) or Grand Record: I'd expect to see a Vagner crown with sharp edges. But specs do change over the years and by territory, back then (early '70s) not ever Moto was a USA-spec bike as imagined by Ben Lawee. Is there an adapter for the threadless stem or did somebody clamp this stem to a threaded fork (which would definitely point to a non-original fork!)?
