Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ceramic coating on matte paint

Dear all.
I have a great experience with ceramic coating on cars. I wanted to use a ceramic coating made for matte car pains on my matte bicycle. Any thoughts? Should be safe? Bike paints are similar to cars and I assume as long as is a matte pain ceramic coating, should be ok.

I’m not familiar with ceramic coatings for matte paint, but if such a thing exists, I’d not worry about using it on matte bike paint.

I used Gyeon Can Coat on my Kinesis a few years ago; not sure it was worth the effort in my case because the bike was complete, but should be easier to do a bare frame and fork.

Ok, so I did the coating as per instructions and ended up great. I did 2 coats, 8 hours apart.
I also did the carbon wheels.
Used Dr. Beasley's matte coating.

Looks nice, but the real test will be the protection from dirt and potentially micro scratches from washing.

Ceramic coats do a good job of preventing dirt from getting on car paints, so I expect to be the same on the bike.

Can't wait for the season.

I am sure indyfabz can talk about his Cerakoted bike.

I think the only downside, really, is additional weight. Did you weigh your bike before and after? Before/after pics???

This thread is about ceramic coatings to protect paint, which are quite different from Cerakote.

Oops, my bad.

I had thought that Cerakote means ceramic coating but that was an assumption that may not be right.

No, you are correct, it’s just that Cerakote is a finish, whereas the OP is talking about a protective coat to go over a painted finish.

Make sure you keep it off your brake surfaces. Otherwise I know what your next thread will be about.

I am big into car detailing, and typically I have used lite coatings on my bikes (Lithium Ceramic Slam, TAC Moonlight etc). I actually had some left over Kamakazi ISM and used it on my new bike and I am super happy with it.

The real question from weight weenies is... how much weight did you end up adding?

5 micro grams for 2 full coats seems unreal!

And if you add 5 micro grams in 100,000,000 places on your bike then you've added over a pound !! <grin>

(might have misplaced a decimal, but you get the idea)

Let us know how it goes. I won't go matte again, because they seem to have an unmatched ability to highlight oil and grease smudges.

I had some leftover coating after I coated my car with Dr. Beasley's Matte Paint Coating so i decided to coat my bicycle. It seems like it's keeping the bike "cleaner" than usual. I can easily wipe down the bike after the ride...
