How many riders are in the area you ride? Some of the rides here have so many people waving would be a PITA. The trails closest to me I rarely see another rider. Saw one rider today so it was a busy day. We both nodded. Also saw the largest tortoise I have seen in the wild. She just hid in her shell. If I'm really in the zone I may not wave. Don't take it personally.

Sup Larry! You know many of us are getting older. With advancing age comes diminished eyesight and hearing. You need to make yourself more noticeable, visually and audibly. Affect a unique hair style, facial hair included. Always wear Hi Viz or plaid, some body paint if shirtless. Accessorize your bike. Walmart has an aisle full of stuff, a flag is a good start. Work on developing your own "signature" call so folks will know who is about to overtake. Follow your instincts and you can quickly become a local legend.

True, but low hanging, unimaginative fruit still attracts a lot of people.

Why do so many people not greet riders they pass? It seems like 4/5 of the time when someone passes me they do it without even acknowledging my presence, and when they do acknowledge me its usually with something like "on your left" which takes longer than just saying hi. I salute to riders coming towards me 9 out of 10 times, and verbally greet every rider I pass even if I'm redlined sprinting. It triggers me when this happens, I wonder if its because I look like a commuter not a roadie, I always chase them down and see how their day is going when people do this to me.
Yesterday I was riding with my dad and asked him why he doesn't say hi, he was like "I didn't think they would appreciate it, when I get passed im upset at the situation and the other rider" ???? hes so weird LOL

I’d wager if you wore a shirt, you would find three out of five don’t say hi. Wear a jersey and it will likely be two out of five. Wear full kit and they will invite you to group rides.

You know you're supposed to start a post here with a greeting?
Any of these is fine:
Hi, hello, Marhaba, Grüß Gott, Namaskar, Zdraveite, Hola, Hafa adai, Nǐ hǎo, Dobra većer, God dag, Hoi, Hallo, hyvää päivää, Bonjour, Dia dhuit, Guten tag, Yasou, Shalom, Namaste, Jo napot, Góðan dag, Nde-ewo, Selamat siang, Salve, Konnichiwa, Ahn nyong ha se yo, Salve, Sveiki, Moïen, Bonġu, Niltze, Namastē, Hallo, Salam, Cześć, Olá, Bună ziua, Zdravstvuyte, Zdravo, Ahoj, Hola, Hujambo, Hallå, Ia orna, Sawasdee, Avuxeni, Merhaba, Zdravstvuyte, Assalamo aleikum, xin chào, Shwmae, Sawubona.

I generally say hi to most people but in general its people going the opposite direction from me since we are sort of face to face. If I'm passing though it is usually me saying "on your left" which is a greeting of sorts. I might throw a "hi" in there if there is time.
Not everyone says hi back and honestly I don't say hi every time myself and it's ok. Sometimes I'm in the middle of an effort, or maybe I'm just lost in my thoughts while riding. No offense intended.
I nodded at you (Larry) the other day when we passed going different directions.

And you know, honestly? - I don't actually like being talked at while riding, so I return the favor of silence. It's part of the whole 'low social needs introvert' thing. So if I pass you without saying 'Hi', don't feel singled out. I don't greet anyone. Please don't chase me down and try to talk to me.

Maybe people would wave to you if you put a damn shirt on.........
Totally. Never seen this discussed before.
Gotta be a solid 10/10 effort in discovering a brand new topic.

Because there are so many other people out on the roads. If there weren't a cyclist passing every couple seconds, maybe I'd be more likely to wave. I also don't wave at other drivers when I'm in a car.
