Recommend Rims for a Wheel rebuild

I have a pair of Fir Nettuno rims laced to Campag Mirage 8spd hubs. The hubs still spin great, but the rims are cracked around the eyelets and are out-of-true enough to not work smoothly on my Cycleops. I have a pair of spare wheels on the bike in question, so no urgency to repair, but if I’m ever going to have a stab at wheel building, this is the project. Can anyone here recommend a good 32h rim to go with a late-90s silver group set? I prefer silver but happy to go with black if the price is right.

I can fix you up with a pair of Mavic CXP33's in black with a machined brake track, OR a set of silver Mavic Open Elite's, OR a set of Elite's in the impossible-to-find black.
I've built with both of those rim sets before, and they make up a nice set of clinchers. Good looking & durable.
PM me if interested.

H Plus Son Archetype matches your Nettunos pretty nicely. Not cheap but...
I currently have H Plus Son TB-14s which built up very nicely.

I have a TB-14 rim, and it was a pleasure to build the wheel. They are well reputed.

TB14’s. Endorsed by retrogrouches everywhere.

As an option, have a look at the Pacenti Brevets.

Agreed. I have a set built up on some 600 Ultegra 8 speed hubs and they are marvelous!

Open Pros would be a good traditional build. Agree the TB-14 looks good and the brand has a good reputation.

I believe they went out of production within the last year or so, but if you could get your hands on some Velocity Aero rims, they'd be a really close visual match for your old rims.

Not sure what you are looking for, but though slightly heavier, I really have liked the Rigida DP18s (I am a big fan of Mavic green MA 40s)

For silver, I'd also say the TB14's. I've got them on a couple of bikes. Here's one.

But for late 90's, depending on the frame, a black rim can give a nice look. Here's my Bianchi with DT Swiss R460, which are a fantastic rim for the price (~$40 each). Same tires as on the Gios above for comparison.

I'm done with open pros. I have read many accounts about the welded joint developing a rattle and I poo-poo-ed it. Now I have one with a rattle.

The Velocity Aerohead were pretty neat, light, and built up nicely, but now they are had to find. Velocity makes the A23 which is a wider Aerohead.

Sure, the Aerohead/A23 wouldn't be bad either. I'm thinking of the original Aero, which was not very wide and had a much more rounded shape:

It was still listed on the Velocity web page until a year or two ago.

The velocity aero reminded me of the 27" Araya rims I'd built for an 80s raleigh grand prix, they're a nice rim. The thing with Velocity if that they show up in large quantity on Ebay and go for less then MSRP especially in silver. I've got my 93 Giant built with aeroheads and they've been a really sturdy build and as light as the open pro. The only down side with the rim brake is if they don't have a machined sidewall the seam isn't always perfect; first velocity I bought were the MTB aeroheats which would now qualify as a road sized rim width-wise and it had just smooth aluminum sides that you could feel the seam hit the v-brakes on every rotation.

Jumping in on this one...

I've got some nice hubs that are begging to be laced up to some rims, and seeing as I can't land any NOS Campagnolo Omegas I'm thinking of getting some modern retro inspired rims.

Options are H Plus Son TB14 or Archetype, Pacenti Brevet or Soma Eldon.

I've used the TB14's before, so I know they're good, I'm sure the Archetypes are too. Has anyone used the Pacenti Brevets or Soma Eldons that could provide some feedback? The Eldons don't have a machined braking surface, is that a deal breaker? I'm not even sure if I can get the Brevets or Eldons in Australia.

I've got 650b Brevets and am a very happy customer. First (and only) set of wheels I've built and they went smoothly. Checked trueness the other day after 1,500 miles, everything looks solid. Braking is great, still shine great when clean, tires come off and go on nice and easy if needed (all relative of course). I do use them with tubes, not tubeless.

Coincidentally the next wheel build for me would be some Omega V tubulars I got hanging around for my Bianchi. Good luck with your search and future wheels!
