Worst free bike ever...Save or not?

Bonus points for identification...

Yuck

Derailleur looks fine

BB eek...

Time for duct tape?

I can’t begin to imagine the fusion...

That is one nasty looking Trek.

The saddle gets serious style bonus points.

That rear rack looks salvageable.

This bike has real promise though as yard art. There is stuff growing on that bike that you should leave be and see what happens . . .

Strip it of useable parts and bin it. That one is for bike Valhalla.

The oval headbadge...I'm totally guessing but some kind of trek? I said fuji before but then saw the dropout.

it’s definitely a “Trek”. I am toying with the idea of using a drill mounted grinder to see if there are decent bones under the carcass.

Amazingly, despite how they look the wheels are original and butter smooth.

Crank is one of my favorite cheap ones...Sakae CX triple.

I don't think I could bin a trek like that without seeing if I could save it. It's been rattle canned, and has terrifying looking rust, but maybe it's worth a media blast? I'd media blast it (carefully) and then at least you can repaint it white and donate as a ghost bike.

Yikes to that BB indeed!

ha ha no that frame is toast!!

Perhaps not the “worst free bike ever” but certainly qualifies for entry into the “worst condition” competition . I would guess that the frame is beyond saving but after a complete disassembly and some serious sand/bead blasting, things may not be as bad as one might think . It would truly be a “labor of love” and the sweat equity would likely never be recovered. For someone with nothing better to do, it could be fun challenge .

Trash that one.

A bike which is structurally sound, but looks bad, is a good bike. People are not likely to steal it.

What have they done???

This is the bicycle equivalent of those abused dogs they show in the commercials where they want you to donate $1.15 per week to help save them...

Nope! That is one old road bike that I would not bring home. Perhaps snap up the wheels, but the rest of rust should be allowed to rest in peace.

Looking at pics don’t I see a rusted through top tube with fiberglass auto body tape on it? Isn’t that also a cracked upper headtube lug with perhaps holes behind it? Looking at the pics on my iPad vs a larger screen, but makes one wonder how it didn’t fold in half. 100 lb rider maybe?

Could be worse!
I brought home one like that and as soon as I leaned it against the house, the ANTS started swarming out of it.
