you are right of course, not difficult at all, but how does wiping it down after lubing prevent dust/dirt sticking to it while out riding? i get that it removes the excess lube, but that is all it does.

It's the excess lube on the outside that attracts the dirt and dust. Wipe all that away, and most of the "dirty" problem goes away. The only oil I want on my chain is inside the rollers.

Commenting on the cleanliness is a relative comparison to the topic at hand, but it's not even an apples-to-apples comparison when drivetrain maintenance is looked at, in whole.

It does vary. Maintaining my bike is a means to an end, which is riding. If you want more work for yourself, enjoy.

Kudos to you for a decade's long lack of inquisitiveness, I guess.

So, do you have any advice to the OP or nah? I'm sure that there are plenty of threads on oil-based lubes, otherwise.

Yes. See below.

Not that in any way do I think you'll believe this (nor do I really care if you do or don't), but I just grabbed my chain at the bottom with my left hand, and spun the cranks backwards with my right hand while grasping the chain with my left hand for a revolution of the cranks. Last time I rode was Sunday.

No mark. No stain. Not even a greasy feeling on my left hand.

Consider the question answered...if you know what I mean.

Sweet. You can do what I can do and you only need to expend twenty times the effort - good for you. Are you done touting your lube in a waxing thread?

I put oil on my chain, spun it around, and wiped off the excess. Don’t really think that was “twenty times the effort” compared to doing what you do. Also didn’t have to take my chain off. I also didn’t need to buy any more kitchen appliances. Your last question is silly considering wax is a “lube.”

You don't know what you don't know - funny how that works. Now are you done?

And you just don't know. I guess I'm done. For now.
